Caris Life Sciences analyzes DNA and RNA in tumor tissue and blood samples and reports molecular findings to physicians to help guide cancer treatment. Its tissue-based MI Profile tests generate most of its revenue; Caris Assure provides blood-based testing. Physicians and hospitals order the tests, while customers and third-party payers pay for them. Medicare-covered patients account for a substantial share of testing revenue, and a limited number of payers supply much of the company’s revenue. The business therefore depends on physicians continuing to order tests and payers covering and reimbursing them.
Caris also earns a smaller revenue stream from biopharma research services. It tests samples and combines molecular findings with clinical information to help partners develop drugs and identify suitable patients. It also licenses deidentified research datasets, including datasets built with clinical-data partners such as ConcertAI, Flatiron and COTA. This work draws on the samples and data accumulated through clinical testing; continued use depends on partner data access, appropriate consent and privacy rules.
Caris relies solely on Illumina for its sequencing instruments, associated reagent kits and instrument servicing. Its clinical laboratories must maintain required certifications and licenses. MI Cancer Seek, part of MI Profile, has FDA approval, while other tests are offered as laboratory-developed tests under an uncertain regulatory framework. Caris Assure lacks the approval required to market it in New York.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Caris chiefly depends on cancer-profiling volume and reimbursement; watch Roche, whose Foundation Medicine is an important rival missing from this list and which also supplies laboratory testing materials.
Tempus AI competes with Caris for tissue and blood cancer-testing orders and for biopharma spending on research services, oncology data and analytics. Watch its Diagnostics business and data licensing to life sciences customers: both overlap with businesses Caris sells.
Guardant Health competes with Caris for blood and tissue tests that help doctors choose cancer treatments, and for testing and data contracts with biopharma companies. Its oncology and biopharma-and-data revenue are the lines to watch for this overlap, rather than Shield screening revenue.
NeoGenomics competes with Caris for cancer molecular-testing orders from community oncologists and hospitals, and for drug-development testing paid for by pharmaceutical companies. Its laboratory testing and expert interpretation let community practices participate in diagnosis without necessarily buying laboratory technology or hiring staff—a concrete offering to watch in Caris's community market.
Natera competes with Caris for oncology testing and biopharma business, but its cancer offering focuses more on personalized blood tests for treatment decisions and monitoring. Watch Signatera's research use by cancer researchers and biopharma companies, where Natera also sells testing services.
Personalis competes with Caris in cancer gene testing for treatment decisions and in comprehensive sequencing sold to biopharma companies for research and personalized therapies. Its work on personalized cancer-therapy development and clinical trials is the clearest area to watch alongside Caris's own biopharma services.
BillionToOne competes with Caris through Northstar blood tests that help physicians select treatment and monitor response in patients with late-stage solid tumors. Watch its Northstar oncology business, not its UNITY prenatal tests, for the competition relevant to Caris.
Caris buys sequencing instruments and laboratory materials from Illumina to run clinical and research profiling, putting Illumina upstream of its testing business. Watch NovaSeq systems' throughput and sequencing costs; Caris says these systems improve laboratory efficiency, while its supply agreement has no minimum purchase requirement.
Myriad Genetics competes with Caris for tumor profiling and tests that identify patients suited to particular cancer drugs, known as companion diagnostics, used by oncologists to select treatment. Watch Precise Tumor, BRACAnalysis CDx and MyChoice CDx rather than Myriad's women's-health or mental-health tests for this overlap.
NeoGenomics, Inc. earningsNEO
NeoGenomics, Inc.'s report will show how cancer-testing work from community oncologists is changing in the same market where Caris seeks orders.
Focus on NeoGenomics' oncology testing, especially testing volume or related revenue from community practices and hospitals. Growth would suggest demand for the community cancer testing Caris also pursues is holding up, though NeoGenomics may be winning more of those orders; weakness could mean softer demand or lost ground for NeoGenomics, and does not by itself prove that Caris is receiving fewer orders.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
Caris’s Fed-linked borrowing costs can change with interest rates, affecting how much it pays to service its $400 million variable-rate term loan and how much cash remains for its laboratories, research and commercial growth.
Expected4.0%Last release4.0%
If it comes in above expectations
If the Fed’s rate is higher than expected, higher borrowing costs could leave Caris with less cash for laboratory capacity, research and commercial expansion.
If it comes in below expectations
If the Fed’s rate is lower than expected, lower borrowing costs could leave Caris with more cash for laboratory capacity, research and commercial expansion.
Illumina Inc earningsILMN
Illumina's report will show whether the performance of a key supplier of the sequencing equipment and reagents Caris relies on supports its testing laboratories.
Watch Illumina's sequencing-related business and, if disclosed, trends in sequencing-system throughput, efficiency and costs. Steady performance or better efficiency would support the view that a supplier Caris relies on can serve expanding laboratory work; weaker performance would put more attention on Caris's reliance on a single supplier for sequencing instruments and reagent kits, but Illumina's report cannot establish that Caris's own prices or supply have changed.
Caris Life Sciences, Inc. earningsThis company
Caris Life Sciences' report will show whether its mostly tissue-based molecular profiling business can turn more cases and reimbursement revenue into better economics.
Read molecular-profiling revenue and clinical case volume alongside gross profit, which is revenue less the cost of services. If case volume and gross profit rise with revenue, Caris is turning more tests into more gross profit; if revenue grows but volume or gross profit lags, growth depends more on higher reimbursement or product mix, or the cost of serving additional tests is eating into the gain.
