Company

Company overview

ArcBest’s main business serves shippers whose loads do not fill an entire truck. ABF Freight carries these less-than-truckload shipments through its pickup, delivery and distribution network across North America. Customers pay freight charges under negotiated prices or published rates, and this network-based business supplies most of ArcBest’s revenue.

ArcBest also earns revenue by arranging transportation rather than carrying all the freight itself. MoLo finds third-party carriers for truckload shipments, while Panther arranges urgent deliveries, often requiring specialized equipment. Its managed transportation service coordinates customers’ shipping using these businesses and ABF Freight. Customers pay ArcBest, which pays outside carriers for the capacity it purchases; earnings depend on the relationship between customer prices and carrier costs.

The business depends on customers having goods to move and on available transportation capacity. ABF Freight’s facilities and much of its handling labor carry fixed costs, making shipment volume important to covering those costs. ArcBest has no significant customer concentration, but customer relationships generally lack long-term contracts or minimum-volume commitments.

  • Old Dominion Freight Line and ArcBest’s ABF Freight compete for shippers’ smaller loads through nationwide less-than-truckload (LTL) networks. Old Dominion’s LTL revenue is a useful gauge of the industrial freight demand facing ABF.

  • Saia, Inc. competes with ArcBest’s ABF Freight for customers shipping smaller loads, with national networks offering standard, time-definite and expedited LTL services. Watch Saia’s LTL revenue for a read on the freight market ABF serves.

  • XPO, Inc.’s North American network competes directly with ArcBest’s ABF Freight to carry customers’ smaller loads on domestic and cross-border routes. Its North American LTL results, rather than its European transportation business, offer the closer comparison for ABF.

  • FedEx Freight Holding Company, Inc. competes with ArcBest’s ABF Freight for customers’ smaller shipments through its Priority and Economy LTL services. Watch Priority for competition in urgent, time-definite freight and Economy for shipments with more flexible delivery schedules.

  • TFI International Inc. competes with ArcBest on two fronts: its U.S. operations carry smaller loads against ABF Freight, while its services arranging carriers and managing customers’ shipments overlap with ArcBest’s Asset-Light business. Its U.S. LTL results are the closer comparison for ABF; brokerage and transportation management are the areas to watch for Asset-Light.

  • Knight-Swift Transportation Holdings Inc. competes with ArcBest both in carrying customers’ smaller loads through LTL networks and in arranging third-party freight transportation through brokerage. Watch its LTL and Logistics segments separately to distinguish competition with ABF Freight from competition with ArcBest’s Asset-Light business.

  • RXO, Inc. competes with ArcBest’s MoLo and managed transportation services by finding independent carriers for shippers and managing their freight movements. Its truck brokerage results offer a comparison for MoLo, while its managed transportation business shows competition for customers outsourcing shipment planning and procurement.

  • C.H. Robinson Worldwide, Inc. competes with ArcBest to arrange customers’ full and smaller truckloads, manage logistics and organize international air and ocean shipments. Watch its North American Surface Transportation results for truckload and LTL brokerage, and Global Forwarding for competition with ArcBest’s international shipping services.

  • Landstar System Inc competes with ArcBest’s Asset-Light business by arranging customers’ truckload, expedited and specialized shipments through third-party carriers. Its expedited and temperature-controlled transport offerings are the areas to watch alongside ArcBest’s Panther services.

  • J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc competes for ArcBest’s Asset-Light customers through Integrated Capacity Solutions, which arranges freight transportation and provides logistics services. Watch that segment’s results for the brokerage comparison, rather than treating J.B. Hunt’s rail-linked intermodal or dedicated trucking business as the same tie.

  • Covenant Logistics Group, Inc. competes with ArcBest’s Panther in expedited trucking and with MoLo in arranging carriers for customers through its Managed Freight brokerage business. Watch Expedited and Managed Freight revenue separately for these two parts of ArcBest’s business.
