Allegion makes products that secure doors and control entry and exit in buildings, with brands including Schlage, LCN and Von Duprin. Mechanical products account for most revenue; electronic locks and access-control systems provide another substantial revenue stream. The United States is its largest market.
Distributors, wholesalers and retailers buy most of its products to supply businesses, institutions and households. These channel partners help customers select products and arrange fulfillment and installation for commercial and institutional users. Some businesses sell directly to end users, including Stanley Access Technologies. Allegion also earns a smaller share from services such as automatic-entrance maintenance and repair, and from software for access control and workforce management.
Demand depends on construction and remodeling activity and on its distribution and retail network. No single customer dominates revenue, although major retailers are important buyers with bargaining power. Products must meet local certification requirements and applicable fire and building codes.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Watch Assa Abloy and dormakaba: neither appears in this list, but they are Allegion’s principal global competitors and especially important to its competitive position.
Fortune Brands Innovations, Inc. competes for North American residential lock and electronic-security sales that Allegion also pursues, selling through distributors, home centers and other retail channels. Its Security business is the part to watch for competition with Allegion’s residential offerings, rather than its faucets or outdoor products.
Armstrong World Industries and Allegion share exposure to commercial and institutional construction and renovation: Armstrong supplies ceilings and walls, while Allegion supplies door and access systems. Watch Armstrong’s work with architects and contractors to get its products chosen for building projects—the same kind of selection process matters to Allegion.
Simpson Manufacturing Co., Inc. and Allegion both depend on North American building activity: Simpson sells connectors and anchors that hold building structures together, while Allegion supplies their door and security hardware. Simpson’s North America business, operating primarily in the United States and Canada, is the relevant part to watch.
A. O. Smith and Allegion sell into many of the same North American residential and commercial building markets, supplying water heaters and locks and access systems respectively. A. O. Smith’s North American water-heater sales to homes, hotels, offices and schools offer a view of customer markets that also matter to Allegion.
Masco and Allegion both benefit from home-improvement spending: Masco sells branded fixtures, paint and hardware, while those projects also need Allegion’s residential locks and door products. Watch Masco’s Decorative Architectural Products sales, which normally strengthen in the second and third calendar quarters alongside peak repair and remodeling activity.
Mohawk Industries and Allegion share demand from residential and commercial construction and renovation, selling flooring and door and access hardware respectively. Mohawk’s flooring sales for new buildings and remodeling offer a view of the project spending that also supports Allegion’s products.
Builders FirstSource and Allegion share exposure to U.S. homebuilding and remodeling: Builders FirstSource sells doors and other building materials to professional builders whose projects also need Allegion’s residential door hardware. Its door sales are a concrete place to watch demand from those builders.
Lowe’s brings Allegion’s Schlage locks to home-improvement customers by buying and reselling them. The repair and remodeling projects Lowe’s serves also drive demand for Allegion’s residential hardware.
Housing Starts (Sep)
Allegion sells residential locks and access-control products, so measures of new homes being built and sold indicate whether homebuilders and distributors may buy more or fewer of them.
Expected1.31MLast release1.275M
If it comes in above expectations
If the reading is above the 1.31M estimate, it is above the previous 1.275M. More homebuilding can support orders for Allegion’s residential locks and access-control products, lifting product sales; stronger home sales can also encourage purchases through its distributors and home-improvement channels.
If it comes in below expectations
Less homebuilding can weaken orders for Allegion’s residential locks and access-control products, reducing product sales; slower home sales can also dampen purchases through its distributors and home-improvement channels.
Allegion Public Limited Company earningsThis company
Allegion’s report will show whether growth in locks, electronic access products, and services and software is also lifting operating income in its two segments.
Read revenue and operating margin for both segments together, then see how Allegion explains the contributions from pricing, volume, acquisitions, and currency. Growth with stable or improving margins, supported by volume, would show customers are driving the business; weak growth or falling margins would point to softer demand or costs offsetting gains from pricing and other factors.
Armstrong World Industries, Inc. earningsAWI
Armstrong World Industries’ report will show whether commercial and institutional projects are still choosing its ceilings and walls, offering a read on demand for Allegion’s door and access systems in those projects.
Look for whether project demand and sales of Armstrong’s products hold up, and what the company says about architects and contractors selecting them. Steady demand and selection would suggest commercial and institutional projects are moving ahead, giving Allegion’s related systems a chance to be included; weaker demand or fewer selections would mean fewer sales opportunities for Allegion in those projects.
Builders FirstSource, Inc. earningsBLDR
Builders FirstSource’s report will show professional builders’ demand for doors, which are also used in the residential projects that need Allegion’s locks and hardware.
Focus on Builders FirstSource’s door sales. Stronger sales would show firmer builder demand for doors and related hardware, supporting project demand for Allegion’s residential locks and hardware; weaker sales would point to fewer or smaller builder projects and a narrower opportunity for Allegion.
Fortune Brands Innovations, Inc. earningsFBIN
Fortune Brands’ report will show how its Security business is faring in North American residential locks and electronic security, where it competes directly with Allegion.
Focus on Fortune Brands’ Security business, not its faucets or outdoor products. Stronger security sales would show that it is capturing more demand in the residential lock and electronic-security markets it shares with Allegion, raising competitive pressure; weaker sales would point to less pressure on Allegion in those markets.
Lowe's Companies Inc. earningsLOW
Lowe’s report will show how home repair and remodeling demand is holding up, and offer a read on customers buying Allegion’s Schlage locks through the retailer.
Look at Lowe’s home-improvement sales and what it says about repair and remodeling demand. Steady demand and supported sales would show customers are still undertaking projects that call for residential hardware, supporting demand for Allegion’s Schlage locks through Lowe’s; weaker demand would mean fewer customer purchases through that channel.
