Albertsons serves shoppers across the United States through stores operating under multiple local banners. Groceries and fresh foods account for most revenue; in-store pharmacies provide another substantial source, while fuel contributes a smaller share. Customers buy national-brand and Own Brands products in stores or order online for home delivery or Drive Up & Go curbside pickup. Stores also fulfill online orders, with delivery available through Albertsons’ platform and partners including Instacart, DoorDash and Uber.
The business depends on keeping shelves stocked, especially with fresh products, and retaining enough staff to run stores and serve customers. Earnings depend on what remains after merchandise, labor and fulfillment costs, while prices must remain attractive to shoppers. Revenue comes from a broad customer base rather than a single large buyer, and Albertsons does not depend on any one supplier.
Its pharmacies need state licenses and federal drug-enforcement registration. Participation in government healthcare programs also requires enrollment and compliance; losing those approvals can prevent pharmacies from operating or serving those programs.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Kroger competes directly with Albertsons for household grocery spending: both run large U.S. supermarket networks that also sell prescriptions and fuel. Kroger's grocery pricing and loyalty offers are worth watching for pressure on Albertsons' shopping baskets.
Walmart competes with Albertsons for households' grocery and pharmacy purchases, using low prices, stores and online order fulfillment to win their shopping baskets.
Costco competes with Albertsons for household grocery spending by selling bulk-oriented groceries at low prices through membership warehouses.
Sprouts Farmers Market competes with Albertsons for grocery shoppers by selling fresh, natural and organic foods. Its produce-centered stores make fruit and vegetable sales a useful place to watch competition with Albertsons' fresh-food business.
Grocery Outlet Holding Corp. competes with Albertsons for grocery baskets by selling discounted branded foods, fresh products and everyday staples. Watch its access to discounted merchandise, which supports the prices shoppers compare with Albertsons.
Weis Markets competes with Albertsons for food shoppers where their regional supermarket networks overlap in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic.
BJ's competes with Albertsons for household grocery and fuel spending, selling food and gasoline to members who pay an annual fee. Watch its grocery price advantage: BJ's says a representative basket of manufacturer-branded groceries offers up to 25% savings versus traditional supermarkets.
Ingles Markets and Albertsons both earn money selling groceries to households, so grocery spending and the cost of running thin-margin supermarkets matter to both despite their different regional footprints. Ingles' supermarket margins offer a comparison for Albertsons, rather than a readout of competition in the same markets.
Village Super Market competes with Albertsons for grocery shoppers through its ShopRite and Fairway supermarkets in overlapping northeastern and Mid-Atlantic U.S. markets.
Natural Grocers by Vitamin Cottage competes with Albertsons for natural and organic grocery shoppers, but its large dietary-supplement assortment makes it a less direct comparison. Its grocery sales are more relevant to Albertsons than its supplement sales.
Amazon competes with Albertsons for grocery purchases through Whole Foods and online shopping. Its AWS and broader retail operations make Amazon's overall earnings a less useful comparison for Albertsons than its grocery business.
Sprouts Farmers Market, Inc. earningsSFM
Sprouts Farmers Market's report will show how shoppers are responding to its produce-focused stores, a useful comparison for Albertsons' fresh-food business.
Compare Sprouts Farmers Market's produce performance with its overall sales. Stronger produce sales would show that shoppers are still spending on fresh food, putting more demand pressure on Albertsons' fresh-food aisles; weaker produce sales would suggest less pressure from this produce-focused rival.
Walmart Inc. earningsWMT
Walmart's report will show whether its low prices and online and in-store service keep drawing grocery spending, a direct read on the pressure Albertsons faces for household baskets.
Watch Walmart's grocery sales and whether both stores and online fulfillment are drawing purchases. Stronger sales would show that households are still responding to Walmart's prices and convenience, raising the pressure on Albertsons to win their visits and baskets; weaker sales would suggest less pull from that offer and potentially less competitive pressure on Albertsons.
The Kroger Co. earningsKR
Kroger's report will show how sales and price offers at a direct supermarket rival are drawing grocery baskets that Albertsons also competes for.
Read Kroger's comparable sales alongside its pricing and loyalty offers. Stronger sales would show that shoppers are still spending at its supermarkets, leaving Albertsons more need to defend its traffic and baskets; weaker sales would suggest less momentum at this direct rival and potentially less pressure to win customers.
Albertsons Companies, Inc. earningsThis company
Albertsons' report will show whether grocery sales can grow while the company protects gross margin from pharmacy mix and the cost of fulfilling online orders.
Read identical sales alongside gross margin. If sales grow and margin holds, Albertsons' grocery business is bringing in enough revenue to offset the higher pharmacy mix and costs such as delivery; if sales weaken and margin falls, customer demand or revenue per basket is not covering operating costs, and the quality of sales growth remains in question.
