Company

Company overview

Ingles Markets serves shoppers through stores mostly branded Ingles, with a smaller group operating as Sav-Mor. Customers buy groceries, fresh food and prepared meals, while pharmacies and fuel stations at some locations provide additional reasons to visit. These retail purchases account for nearly all company revenue. Smaller sources of revenue include a milk-processing plant that supplies its own stores but sells most of its output to other retailers and distributors, and rent from shopping centers.

The business is concentrated in the Southeast, with North Carolina and Georgia contributing most store sales. Its supply network is also regional: facilities near Asheville, North Carolina, provide most store inventory, while outside suppliers deliver the rest directly. The business therefore depends heavily on shoppers in this region and on keeping its central distribution facilities and local stores operating.

Ingles Markets’ results hinge on southeastern U.S. grocery spending and local price competition, including from Publix, Food Lion and Aldi, which are absent from this list.

  • Kroger competes with Ingles Markets for shoppers’ grocery, pharmacy and fuel spending. Watch Kroger’s pricing and loyalty offers: they show how it is competing for those same supermarket customers.

  • Walmart’s low-price groceries compete directly for Ingles Markets’ shoppers. Its policy of keeping prices low rather than relying on frequent promotions makes everyday grocery prices the point to watch.

  • Weis Markets offers a comparison for Ingles Markets: both regional grocery chains depend on shoppers’ purchases covering supermarket running costs. Weis sells food in Pennsylvania and surrounding states, so its grocery sales and operating costs are more useful here than evidence of direct local rivalry.

  • Sprouts Farmers Market competes with Ingles Markets for shoppers buying fresh produce, perishables and natural and organic groceries. Perishables accounted for 57.0% of Sprouts’ sales in 2025, making that sales category a useful measure of the business where they overlap.

  • Grocery Outlet Holding Corp. competes with Ingles Markets for price-conscious food shoppers in several of the same southeastern states. It buys discounted merchandise and sells it alongside everyday staples, so its bargain assortment is the offering to watch.

  • Albertsons offers a comparison for Ingles Markets’ exposure to grocery spending and supermarket operating costs: both sell shoppers groceries, pharmacy products and fuel through full-service food stores. Watch those retail sales rather than treating Albertsons as a named local rival.

  • Village Super Market and Ingles Markets both depend on grocery demand in a thin-margin business, but their regional store territories differ. Village sells food through ShopRite and Fairway stores in New Jersey, New York, Maryland and Pennsylvania; its store-sales performance offers a comparison, not a direct read on Ingles’ southeastern customers.
