Company

Company overview

Zoetis develops and manufactures products that help prevent, detect and treat disease in animals. Pet products generate most of its revenue: veterinary distributors buy from Zoetis and supply veterinarians, who typically sell to pet owners; veterinarians also buy directly from the company. Its substantial livestock business serves farmers and other producers, selling through veterinarians and distributors as well as directly to producers.

Revenue depends in part on leading product lines such as Simparica/Simparica Trio and Apoquel/Apoquel Chewable. A single U.S. veterinary distributor is its largest customer and accounts for a substantial share of sales. Zoetis must obtain the required local approvals before marketing new products and maintain approvals for existing ones. Some countries also restrict or ban particular antibacterial medicines for food-producing animals, limiting what its livestock business can sell.

Zoetis’s results hinge mainly on demand for pet treatments and competing product launches, including those from privately held major rival Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health.

  • Elanco competes with Zoetis for veterinarians’ and livestock producers’ spending on parasite control, skin treatments, vaccines and other animal medicines. Watch Elanco’s new pet treatments for advantages in ease of use, effectiveness or cost that could put pressure on Zoetis’s sales or prices.

  • IDEXX and Zoetis both depend on pet owners’ spending on veterinary care, while competing to sell diagnostic tests and equipment to veterinarians. IDEXX’s Companion Animal Group results offer a read on demand for pet testing, relevant to Zoetis’s diagnostics business.

  • Merck’s Animal Health division competes directly with Zoetis by selling veterinary medicines and vaccines to veterinarians, distributors and animal producers. Watch that division’s sales rather than Merck’s overall results, which are dominated by human medicines.

  • Phibro Animal Health Corporation competes with Zoetis for livestock producers’ spending on animal medicines and vaccines, but also bought the medicated feed-additive portfolio Zoetis exited in October 2024. Separate sales from that acquired portfolio when using Phibro’s results to gauge demand for the livestock treatments Zoetis still sells.
