Company

Company overview

YPF connects oil fields, refineries and fuel distribution. Its refineries process mostly its own crude oil, supplemented by purchases from other producers. It sells fuels, including Infinia and Super, through YPF-branded stations and directly to businesses needing fuel for transport and industry. Gasoline and diesel supply most of its revenue, and Argentina is its main market. It also sells natural gas to distributors, industrial customers and power plants, and distributes gas through Metrogas.

The business depends on continued investment in oil and gas fields and enough pipeline capacity to move production to customers and refineries. YPF is shifting investment toward Vaca Muerta shale fields while selling mature conventional fields, and is developing infrastructure to support more exports.

The Argentine government is YPF’s controlling shareholder and can influence operating decisions, including product pricing. Earnings depend on how far fuel prices can keep pace with crude-oil and processing costs; price controls and customers’ ability to absorb increases can limit that adjustment. Government counterparties also supply a significant share of operating cash flow. Some gas sales face regulated prices, and hydrocarbon exports remain subject to government conditions and possible objections to protect domestic supply.

YPF’s growth hinges on Vaca Muerta development and export infrastructure, making ENI and XRG partners to watch in its Argentina LNG project.

  • Vista Energy and YPF both develop Vaca Muerta oil and sell to Argentine and export buyers, exposing them to the same domestic and international pricing pressures. Vista exported 61% of its oil sales volume in 2025, making its export sales a useful comparison as YPF expands crude exports.

  • PAMPA ENERGIA competes with YPF in Argentina by producing natural gas and supplying gas and electricity markets. Watch its gas production share—about 9% of national output in 2025—as a gauge of competing supply in a market where YPF sells to distributors, industrial users and power plants.

  • YPF needs pipeline capacity to sell more Neuquina gas; Transportadora de Gas del Sur (TGS) earns fees for moving shippers’ gas, usually for distributors, rather than buying and reselling it. Watch its GPM and NEUBA I expansion: if implemented, it is expected to add 14 million cubic meters a day of capacity and improve winter gas supply.

  • Chevron develops the Loma Campana shale operation with YPF, directly linking what both earn from oil and gas production there. News on that operation’s production economics matters more for YPF than Chevron’s broader global results.

  • BP competes with YPF through its jointly owned Pan American Energy, which produces oil and gas and refines and sells fuels in Argentina. Pan American Energy’s Argentine production and fuel-sales news is therefore the part of BP to watch for YPF.

  • YPF’s Southern Energy LNG venture depends on Golar LNG’s two leased vessels to turn gas into liquid for export; YPF owns 25% of the project and, through SIE, is to supply 7.4 million cubic meters of gas a day. Watch Hilli’s expected 2027 start and MKII’s construction toward expected 2028 operations, which set the timetable for that gas outlet.

  • Petrobras and YPF both produce crude and refine fuel for domestic buyers, and they also jointly control Argentina’s gas-processing company Mega. Watch Mega’s new module for separating gas liquids: YPF is its main gas supplier, so the expansion directly concerns an outlet for YPF’s production.

  • Ecopetrol offers a comparison for YPF’s mix of oil and gas production and fuel refining for domestic buyers, with Colombia rather than Argentina as its main market. Compare its production and refinery throughput with YPF’s, while keeping the two countries’ domestic market conditions separate.
