Company overview

Oil and gas producers need water to drill and complete wells, and must manage the water that returns to the surface. Select Water Solutions supplies, moves and stores that water for them. Its Water Services business generates most of its revenue, charging mainly by the day, time and materials, or water volume delivered. This business also includes Peak Rentals, which supplies accommodations, rental equipment and mobile power.

Select also owns permanent pipelines and facilities that gather, recycle and dispose of oilfield water. It treats returning water for reuse in well completions and charges customers mainly by the volume handled under long-term agreements. Many contracts commit operators to use Select for water from specified acreage; some guarantee minimum volumes or require payment for shortfalls. Separately, its Chemical Technologies business manufactures and sells chemicals used to complete wells and treat water, with producers and pressure-pumping companies paying mainly for chemicals delivered or consumed.

Demand depends on producers’ drilling and well-completion spending. Much of the business is concentrated in the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico, and one customer contributes a notable share of revenue. Water supply requires access rights and permits, while regulators can restrict or suspend disposal wells because of earthquake concerns.

  • WaterBridge Infrastructure LLC competes with Select for Permian producers’ spending on gathering, transporting, recycling and disposing of water from oil and gas wells. Watch its Delaware Basin water-handling volumes and network expansion where Select is concentrating infrastructure investment.

  • TETRA Technologies, Inc. competes with Select for U.S. oilfield water-management work and services handling fluids that return from wells after fracturing. Its Water & Flowback Services results offer a closer comparison for Select’s water services than its completion-fluid or industrial-chemical sales.

  • ProPetro Holding Corp. and Select depend on the same Permian producers preparing wells for production: ProPetro fractures the wells, while Select transfers water and sells completion chemicals. Watch ProPetro’s fracturing-fleet activity for a read on demand for Select’s water and chemicals in its largest revenue region.

  • Liberty Energy Inc.’s fracturing work and Select’s water and chemical sales depend on producers completing the same onshore wells. Watch Liberty’s North American completion-services activity for signs of demand for the water Select moves and the chemicals it sells to producers and pressure-pumping companies.

  • ProFrac Holding Corp. competes with Select in completion chemicals, while its fracturing fleets serve the same producer activity that supports Select’s water services. Watch its in-house chemical business for competitive overlap and its Stimulation Services activity for the direction of completion demand.

  • Halliburton competes with Select in chemicals sold for well completions, while its work stimulating oil and gas wells also drives demand for Select’s water services. Watch Halliburton’s U.S. stimulation and specialty-chemical business, rather than its broader drilling operations, for the closest connection to Select.

  • KLX Energy Services Holdings, Inc. competes with Select’s Peak Rentals in wellsite equipment rentals and accommodations, and both serve producers drilling and completing wells across the same U.S. shale basins. KLX’s regional drilling and completion results can help distinguish demand in the Permian and Eagle Ford from the Rockies and Northeast/Mid-Con.

  • Ranger Energy Services, Inc. competes with Select for U.S. producers’ spending on completion support, equipment rentals and chemicals. Its completion-support and rental work is the relevant comparison for Select’s Peak Rentals, rather than Ranger’s well-maintenance or gas-processing businesses.

  • Patterson-UTI Energy Inc’s drilling and completion work depends on the same U.S. producer spending that supports Select’s water supply and completion-chemical sales. Watch its drilling-services and completion-services results separately: drilling needs Select’s water sourcing, while completions also consume its chemicals.

  • Nine Energy Service, Inc. prepares unconventional wells for production with downhole services and tools, serving the same completion spending that supports Select’s water and chemical sales. Its North American completion work is the closer signal for Select; Nine also earns completion-tool revenue outside the United States.

  • RPC, Inc. and Select’s water-services business both depend on U.S. producers paying for wellsite operations and completions. Watch RPC’s Technical Services revenue, earned from equipment, crews and materials used at wells, alongside Select’s short-term water-transfer and sourcing work.

  • Smart Sand, Inc. sells sand to producers and oilfield-service companies for the same fracturing operations that consume Select’s water and chemicals. Watch its frac-sand sales volumes rather than industrial-sand sales or payments from customers who buy less than their contracted minimum.
