Company

Company overview

United Natural Foods (UNFI) buys food and household products from suppliers, moves them through its distribution network and delivers them to large grocery chains and smaller retailers across the United States and Canada. Natural, organic and specialty products make up its largest wholesale business, while conventional groceries also contribute a substantial share of sales. Wholesale supplies account for most revenue.

Retailers pay UNFI for the products they order. It generally prices those products using suppliers’ listed costs plus a markup or fee; the difference between its purchase costs and selling prices provides its wholesale gross profit. UNFI also earns revenue from retailer support and marketing services, and sells directly to shoppers through its smaller Cub Foods and Shoppers retail business.

One large customer accounts for a substantial share of sales and relies on UNFI as its primary distributor for natural, organic and specialty non-perishable products. Keeping that business and enough order volume to support its warehouses is important to the economics of the network. Large customers receive volume discounts, so profitability depends on both the mix of customers and the cost of buying, handling and delivering their orders.

Watch privately held KeHE, an important natural-food distribution rival to UNFI that supplied approximately 52% of Sprouts’ total purchases in fiscal 2025.

  • Amazon owns Whole Foods, UNFI’s largest customer, so its grocery purchasing decisions matter directly to UNFI’s wholesale revenue. Watch Whole Foods’ purchases and distribution agreement with UNFI, rather than Amazon’s broader retail results.

  • NATURAL GROCERS BY VITAMIN COTTAGE, INC buys heavily from UNFI to stock the natural and organic groceries and dietary supplements it sells to shoppers: UNFI supplied approximately 69% of its total purchases in the year ended September 30, 2025. Its store growth and purchasing volumes therefore matter directly to UNFI’s natural-food distribution business.

  • Sprouts Farmers Market’s sales of natural and organic groceries to shoppers and its store expansion feed into UNFI’s wholesale volumes through its purchases. UNFI’s share of Sprouts’ total purchases rose to 12% in fiscal 2025 from 3% in each of fiscal 2024 and 2023; watch how much of its purchasing Sprouts directs to UNFI.

  • Performance Food Group and UNFI both buy food in bulk and deliver it to business customers, so food prices, warehouse costs and delivery efficiency affect both companies’ margins. Performance Food Group mainly serves customers providing meals away from home rather than UNFI’s grocery channel; its margin gains from purchasing scale and more efficient deliveries offer a useful comparison.

  • Sysco provides a margin benchmark for UNFI because both buy and distribute broad food assortments through large delivery networks, exposing them to food prices and warehouse and delivery costs. Sysco sells to businesses preparing meals away from home rather than UNFI’s grocery channel, so use its food-distribution margins as a comparison, not a direct read on grocery demand.
