Media companies and owners of entertainment properties pay Kartoon Studios to turn their projects into animated shows and films. Its Mainframe Studios subsidiary handles this commissioned work, which supplies most of the company’s revenue. Kartoon Studios also develops its own children’s programming and manages rights to entertainment brands.
Content distribution is its next-largest revenue source. Networks and streaming services, including Netflix and Nickelodeon, pay to license programming, while Kartoon Channel!, Ameba and Frederator’s YouTube operations earn advertising or subscription revenue. Manufacturers also pay to use its brands on merchandise, often with minimum payment guarantees. Separately, its Beacon agency helps children’s and family brands plan and buy advertising, earning retainers and commissions.
Most revenue comes from a small group of customers, so the business depends heavily on retaining their work. Production schedules affect when projects reach customers, while audience interest affects viewing and demand for licensed programming and merchandise.
Continuing operations also depends on generating revenue and obtaining additional capital; management has identified substantial doubt about the company’s ability to continue operating. Securities rules and an investor agreement restrict some fundraising options, including certain share sales and variable-rate financing transactions.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Netflix pays to carry Kartoon Studios’ programming, but its subscription-funded shows also compete with Kartoon’s children’s content and streaming services for viewers. Watch its children’s programming acquisitions for demand for outside content such as Kartoon’s.
Walt Disney competes with Kartoon Studios for children’s audiences, programming buyers and advertisers: both produce and distribute entertainment and license their characters. Disney’s content licensing and streaming advertising businesses are the parts to watch for this rivalry, rather than its parks.
Mattel is a customer and licensee of Kartoon Studios, so its toy and family-entertainment businesses provide demand for licensed characters and animated programming. Watch Mattel’s licensed toy business: Kartoon earns fees for allowing manufacturers to use its characters, with some agreements also paying more when merchandise sales exceed minimum guarantees.
Sony competes with Kartoon Studios to sell television and animation programming to buyers, but Sony Pictures Animation has also developed programming with Kartoon’s Frederator. News of that programming partnership is more directly relevant to Kartoon than Sony’s PlayStation business.
Lionsgate competes with Kartoon Studios for the money streaming services and broadcasters spend on programming; both produce television shows and sell rights to carry their content. Watch Lionsgate’s television production and content licensing business for competition for those buyers’ budgets.
Comcast is both a content customer and licensee of Kartoon Studios and a rival that produces and distributes entertainment through its media and studio businesses. Its content purchases matter to Kartoon’s licensing revenue, while its own productions compete with Kartoon’s programming.
Alphabet’s YouTube advertising business and Kartoon Studios’ Frederator creator network both depend on video viewing and advertiser spending. Watch YouTube advertising revenue alongside viewing trends: lower viewership cut Frederator’s YouTube content revenue by $2.2 million in the year ended December 31, 2025.
Comcast Corp earningsCMCSA
Comcast's report will show whether this media buyer and content licensee is sustaining programming activity, a signal of demand facing Kartoon Studios.
Look at Comcast's media and studio activity alongside its programming investment. Steady businesses and continued investment would suggest media buyers are still making and acquiring content, supporting the market for Kartoon Studios' licenses. Weak activity and cutbacks would point to tighter buyer demand, but would not establish that Comcast reduced any specific Kartoon Studios order.
Alphabet Inc. earningsGOOG
Alphabet's report will show whether YouTube viewing and ad revenue are holding up, a market signal for Kartoon Studios' Frederator creator network.
Read YouTube ad revenue alongside viewing trends. If both hold or grow, advertisers are still spending on a platform with viewing support, a helpful backdrop for Frederator's ad monetization; if viewing or ad revenue falls, advertising opportunities on the platform may be under pressure. Alphabet reports YouTube-wide results, not Kartoon's own channel performance; lower viewership had previously reduced Frederator's YouTube content revenue by $2.2 million.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
Fed rate decisions affect what Kartoon pays in interest on its $11.8 million of production-facility borrowing, which is priced above bank prime.

If it comes in above expectations
Higher rates across the economy can raise the interest Kartoon pays on its production facilities, increasing the cost of financing its productions.
If it comes in below expectations
Lower rates across the economy can reduce the interest Kartoon pays on its production facilities, easing the cost of financing its productions.
Mattel, Inc. earningsMAT
Mattel's report will show whether toy demand supports licensed characters, including the products that can generate licensing revenue for Kartoon Studios.
Look at Mattel's toy sales and whether it reports results for licensed toys. Growing sales would give licensees more opportunity to sell character-based products to consumers. Kartoon Studios earns more than a minimum guarantee only where a contract provides for additional payments once retail sales pass a set threshold. Weak sales would limit that upside; Mattel's overall sales do not establish how Kartoon-licensed products sold.
Lionsgate Studios Corp. earningsLION
Lionsgate's television production and content licensing will show whether broadcasters and streamers are still spending in the market where Kartoon Studios sells programming rights.
Read Lionsgate's television production and content licensing together. Growth in both would show buyers are still making programs and acquiring rights, while signaling more active competition for the same budgets Kartoon Studios pursues. Weakness in both could reflect tighter buyer spending, not an automatic advantage or more orders for Kartoon.

Kartoon Studios' report will show whether commissioned animation work can keep supporting revenue as content distribution stabilizes or continues to weaken.
Read production-services revenue alongside content-distribution revenue. Production-services revenue follows project progress: Kartoon recognizes it based on costs incurred relative to expected total costs, so recognition can taper as a project nears completion. Steady production-services revenue with distribution revenue stabilizing would show support from both commissioned work and content monetization; production revenue rising while distribution falls further would mean commissioned work is carrying revenue while distribution remains weak.
