Company overview

Suja Life serves consumers seeking organic and health-focused beverages. Suja Organic sells cold-pressed juices and wellness shots, while Vive Organic focuses on wellness shots—small servings of juice-based functional drinks. These products account for nearly all revenue. Slice, its functional soda brand, is a much smaller business still building its market and distribution.

Retailers and distributors buy the beverages for resale through stores and online channels; Suja Life also sells through its own website. Important retail relationships include Whole Foods and Kroger. One distributor and one direct retail customer together supply a substantial share of sales, and direct retail customers generally do not commit to long-term contracts or minimum purchase volumes.

The company buys organic produce from partner farms and makes all Suja Organic and Vive Organic products at its Oceanside, California facilities. It treats bottled juices and shots with high pressure to extend shelf life for nationwide distribution. The business depends on farm supply, this production site and keeping products refrigerated through delivery. Maintaining organic certification requires certified ingredients and compliance with certifiers’ standards; sales also depend on consumers seeing enough quality and value to pay premium prices.

  • Buda Juice competes with Suja for grocery retailers buying fresh juices, organic wellness shots and juices sold under retailers’ own labels. Watch Buda’s wellness-shot and private-label business for signs of competition in product lines Suja also supplies.

  • The Vita Coco Company, Inc. competes with Suja’s juices for shoppers buying natural, health-oriented drinks, selling both its own coconut water brand and retailers’ private-label coconut water. Its private-label business is worth watching for competition at the lower-priced end of those purchases.

  • PepsiCo’s Poppi functional sodas compete directly with Suja’s Slice for consumers looking for alternatives to conventional soda.

  • Coca-Cola Company competes with Suja through Simply and Minute Maid juices, while its soda brands also compete with Slice when consumers choose a refreshment. Its finished drinks reach retailers directly or through distributors and wholesalers; Simply and Minute Maid are the brands to watch for the closest overlap with Suja’s juice business.

  • Keurig Dr Pepper competes with Suja’s juices and Slice for retail beverage purchases through its juice, enhanced-drink and soda range. It sells finished drinks to distributors and retailers, as well as ingredients that bottlers turn into drinks; watch its U.S. Refreshment Beverages business for this competition.

  • Suja depends on Amcor for packaging and exclusively for bottling and packaging Slice, so a disruption could hold up Slice production. Watch Amcor’s supply availability and packaging prices: Suja says replacement capacity may be inadequate and higher costs may not be recoverable through higher drink prices.
