Southern Missouri Bancorp is the holding company of Southern Bank, which serves communities across Missouri, Arkansas, Illinois and Kansas. The bank gathers deposits and uses that money to finance homes, commercial properties and businesses, and to buy investment securities. Borrowers and securities issuers pay it interest. Deposits provide most of its funding, supplemented by borrowings from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines and brokered deposits. Account and card fees, loan sales and wealth-management services contribute a smaller share of revenue.
Most of the loan portfolio is secured by real estate, and business activity and credit exposure are concentrated in Missouri and northern Arkansas. Earnings depend heavily on borrowers’ ability to repay and on the gap between interest earned and funding costs. Retaining deposits matters because replacing them with other funding can cost more; loans and funding can also adjust to changing interest rates at different times.
The holding company receives substantially all its own revenue through dividends from Southern Bank. Those payments depend on the bank’s earnings and regulatory capital requirements. Dividends above permitted earnings-based limits generally require prior regulatory approval, restricting how much cash the bank can send to its parent.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Great Southern Bancorp Inc competes with Southern Bank for Missouri deposits and interest-paying commercial property, business and home borrowers across overlapping Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas markets. Watch the rates Great Southern offers depositors: they show the competition Southern Bank faces for lending funds.
QCR Holdings Inc competes with Southern Bank for Missouri deposits and loans through Guaranty Bank; both earn from the gap between interest collected on loans and investments and interest paid for funding. Guaranty Bank’s deposit and lending business around Springfield and Joplin is the part to watch for local competitive pressure on Southern Bank.
Enterprise Financial Services Corporation’s Enterprise Bank & Trust competes with Southern Bank for business deposits and commercial borrowers in Missouri and Kansas. Its deposits from businesses and professional clients fund loan growth, making those customer relationships worth watching alongside Southern Bank’s loans for inventory, equipment and day-to-day operations.
First Mid Bancshares, Inc. and Southern Bank both depend heavily on commercial property borrowers paying their loans, so First Mid’s property-loan performance is a useful comparison for Southern Bank’s credit risk. First Mid held $2.6 billion of commercial real estate loans at December 31, 2025; Southern Bank’s $1.9 billion represented 43.0% of net loans receivable at June 30, 2026.
German American Bancorp, Inc. offers a comparison for Southern Bank’s local lending business: both take deposits, lend to agricultural, business and property borrowers, and sell home loans to other investors. Watch its agricultural and business lending and mortgage sales for a read on the same kinds of interest and loan-sale income Southern Missouri Bancorp earns.
NB Bancorp, Inc.’s Needham Bank is a close loan-mix comparison for Southern Bank: both use public deposits to fund commercial property, home and business loans. Watch Needham’s commercial property and multifamily loans, which made up 40.7% of its loan portfolio at December 31, 2025, as a comparison for Southern Bank’s property credit exposure.
Mercantile Bank Corp and Southern Bank both use deposits to finance businesses’ day-to-day cash needs and commercial property, earning interest from borrowers. Mercantile emphasizes floating-rate commercial loans, so compare their interest income rather than assuming they move together: Southern Bank had fixed rates on 71.5% of its commercial real estate loans at June 30, 2026.
Mercantile Bank Corp earningsMBWM
Mercantile Bank Corp’s report will show whether interest from its floating-rate commercial loans is keeping ahead of deposit and other funding costs, offering a read on the rate pressure Southern Missouri Bancorp faces.
Read Mercantile’s commercial-loan interest income alongside its funding costs. If loan income keeps pace with or exceeds those costs, its floating-rate loans are still supporting the spread; if funding costs rise faster, the spread is under pressure. Since 71.5% of Southern Bank’s commercial real estate loans were fixed-rate, Mercantile’s result signals rate and funding pressure, not that Southern Missouri Bancorp’s loan income must move the same way.
QCR Holdings Inc earningsQCRH
QCR Holdings Inc’s report will show whether businesses are borrowing and placing deposits with its Guaranty Bank around Springfield and Joplin, a local market Southern Missouri Bancorp also watches.
Read Guaranty Bank’s business lending activity alongside its deposit trends. Strength in both would show that local businesses are borrowing and placing funds with banks, leaving Southern Missouri Bancorp to compete in an active market; weakness in both would show less activity at this competitor, not prove that Southern Missouri Bancorp’s own loans or deposits fell.
Housing Starts (Sep)
Homebuilding and new-home sales track activity that can bring Southern Bank more one- to four-family mortgage borrowers and loan-sale and origination fees, or leave it with fewer such customers and fees.
Expected1.31MLast release1.275M
If it comes in above expectations
If the reading is above the 1.31M estimate, it is above the previous 1.275M. More construction and sales than expected may increase mortgage applications and originations, supporting Southern Bank’s loan-related fees and potential loans for its portfolio or sale in the secondary market.
If it comes in below expectations
Less construction and sales than expected may reduce mortgage applications and originations, weighing on Southern Bank’s loan-related fees and the flow of loans it can hold or sell.
Great Southern Bancorp Inc earningsGSBC
Great Southern Bancorp Inc’s report will show what banks are paying to attract deposits in markets it shares with Southern Missouri Bancorp.
Read the rates or costs Great Southern pays on deposits alongside changes in its deposits. Rising costs mean banks are paying more to keep or attract depositors, adding competitive pressure to Southern Missouri Bancorp’s funding costs; stable costs with deposits retained would suggest less pressure. Great Southern’s results show the competitive setting, not a change already confirmed in Southern Missouri Bancorp’s own costs.
German American Bancorp, Inc. earningsGABC
German American Bancorp’s report will show whether agricultural and business lending and mortgage sales are generating activity and fee income, offering a comparison for similar revenue sources at Southern Missouri Bancorp.
Read German American’s agricultural and business lending activity alongside mortgage sales and related income. Strength in both lending and sales would show those channels are generating interest or fee income; weakness in both would mean less support from those revenue sources. The banks serve different markets, so this is a comparison of Southern Missouri Bancorp’s similar business lines, not proof that its local loan demand is the same.
Southern Missouri Bancorp earningsThis company
Southern Missouri Bancorp earns mainly from the spread between loan interest and the cost of deposits and other funding, and this report will show whether lending income is holding up against funding costs and credit losses.
Read net interest margin alongside credit costs. Net interest margin is the return on loans and other interest-earning assets compared with the cost of deposits and other interest-bearing funding. A steady or wider margin with contained credit costs means loan income is covering funding and borrower risk; a narrower margin with rising credit costs means more expensive funding or repayment trouble is eating into the bank’s income.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
For Southern Bank, Federal Reserve rate decisions shape the rates earned on its loans and securities and paid on community deposits and wholesale funding, changing the spread that drives net interest income.
Expected4.0%Last release4.0%
If it comes in above expectations
If rates rise more than expected, yields on repricing loans and new lending may improve, but higher costs on deposits and Federal Home Loan Bank funding can squeeze Southern Bank’s net interest margin if funding costs rise faster.
If it comes in below expectations
If rates fall more than expected, Southern Bank may pay less for deposits and wholesale funding, but yields on loans and securities may also fall; if asset yields decline faster, its net interest margin may narrow.
First Mid Bancshares, Inc. earningsFMBH
First Mid Bancshares, Inc.’s report will show whether commercial real estate borrowers are paying, a reference point for Southern Missouri Bancorp’s substantial exposure to the same kind of loans.
Check First Mid’s commercial real estate delinquencies, losses, and credit provisions against Southern Bank’s $1.9 billion of commercial real estate loans, equal to 43.0% of net loans receivable. Stable measures would show its borrowers are still paying and offer a steady reference for similar loans; rising delinquencies, losses, or provisions would flag pressure among commercial property borrowers, not prove trouble at Southern Missouri Bancorp.
