Company

Company overview

Safe Bulkers, Inc. carries coal, grain and iron ore on worldwide shipping routes. Customers hire its vessels for an agreed period and pay a daily rate, an arrangement called a time charter. The customer chooses routes and ports and pays most fuel and port costs; Safe Bulkers pays for crew, insurance, maintenance and repairs. Longer-period charters supply most revenue, alongside shorter spot-market charters.

Earnings depend on keeping vessels employed and the rates available when contracts end. Longer contracts provide more predictable income, but replacement charters reflect prevailing shipping demand and vessel supply. The business relies heavily on Asian raw-material trade, particularly routes from Brazil and Australia to China, and coal transportation supplies a significant part of revenue. ADM International SARL is a significant charter customer, though it does not supply most revenue.

Vessels must comply with pollution, emissions and safety requirements, which can require equipment upgrades and restrict operations. A vessel that fails a required survey or loses its classification cannot trade between ports. Charterers’ choices of cargo and ports are also subject to safe-port, lawful-cargo and sanctions restrictions.

Safe Bulkers’ results hinge on dry-bulk charter rates and major charterers such as ADM International SARL, which supplied 16.46% of its 2025 revenue.

  • Star Bulk Carriers Corp. competes with Safe Bulkers for customers paying to move bulk cargo worldwide, across Panamax, Kamsarmax, Post-Panamax and Capesize ships. Watch the charter terms Star Bulk secures from miners, utilities and commodity traders for a read on demand in those shared markets.

  • Diana Shipping, Inc. and Safe Bulkers compete for customers who pay a daily rate to hire dry-bulk ships, with overlap in Panamax, Post-Panamax and Capesize vessels. Diana’s newly agreed daily hire rates offer a comparison for the rates Safe Bulkers can secure.

  • Genco Shipping & Trading and Safe Bulkers both earn money transporting iron ore, coal and grain worldwide, competing directly for Capesize cargo business. Watch Genco’s iron ore and coal transport business rather than its smaller ships’ grain business when assessing demand for Safe Bulkers’ Capesize fleet.

  • Globus Maritime Limited competes with Safe Bulkers for customers hiring Kamsarmax ships to transport dry-bulk cargoes such as coal and grain. Watch the prices Globus secures on longer-term charters, where it says stronger competition can intensify price pressure.

  • EuroDry Ltd. names Safe Bulkers as a competitor for customers paying to transport iron ore, coal and grain worldwide. Its average daily charter earnings provide a concrete comparison for pricing in that shared cargo market.

  • Seanergy Maritime Holdings Corp. rents Capesize and Newcastlemax dry-bulk ships to customers in the same large-vessel market as Safe Bulkers’ Capesize fleet. Its customers pay hire linked to the Baltic Capesize Index, making that charter revenue useful to watch alongside Safe Bulkers’ own index-linked revenue.

  • Himalaya Shipping Ltd. competes for customers hiring large dry-bulk ships with its Newcastlemax fleet, overlapping Safe Bulkers’ Capesize business. Watch the premium customers pay above the Baltic Capesize charter index on Himalaya’s index-linked charters for a comparison of pricing in that market.

  • Navios Maritime Partners L.P. competes with Safe Bulkers for paying dry-bulk charter customers, but also rents out container ships and tankers, making its overall results a less direct comparison. Watch its dry-bulk charter revenue separately: part of that business remains exposed to market rates.
