Company overview

Diana Shipping provides ships to regional and international companies that need to transport dry bulk commodities by sea. Customers hire vessels for an agreed period, typically paying a fixed daily rate and covering fuel, canal and port charges. Diana Shipping pays for crews, insurance, repairs and maintenance. Substantially all its revenue comes from the dry bulk market.

Most vessels operate under short- to medium-term contracts, so earnings depend on keeping ships employed and the rates available when contracts are renewed. Demand for seaborne raw materials, particularly from China, helps determine those rates. A small number of charterers supply a significant share of revenue, making their continued hire payments and replacement business important.

Sanctions restrict the ports its ships may visit and the cargoes and counterparties it may serve. Environmental rules also govern vessel operations and port access and can require spending on ship modifications.

  • Genco competes with Diana Shipping for large- and smaller-vessel dry-bulk business, but Diana also owned 14.8% of Genco at year-end 2025, so Genco's share value feeds into Diana's results. Genco earns money carrying customers' iron ore, coal, grain and other bulk cargoes; watch its response to Diana's acquisition proposal, which it had rejected as of February 25, 2026.

  • Star Bulk Carriers Corp. competes across Diana Shipping's dry-bulk vessel classes, earning hire from miners, utilities and commodity traders that need ships to carry cargo. Its conditional agreement to buy 16 Diana vessels for $470.5 million depends on Diana's proposed Genco acquisition proceeding, making that purchase's progress a direct signal for Diana's fleet reshaping.

  • Safe Bulkers, Inc. competes with Diana Shipping for customers hiring Panamax, Kamsarmax, Post-Panamax and Capesize ships to carry coal, grain and iron ore. The daily hire it secures on those overlapping vessel classes offers a comparison for Diana's new charter terms.

  • Seanergy Maritime Holdings Corp. competes with Diana Shipping's large bulk carriers, but the hire customers pay for its Capesize and Newcastlemax ships gives a more immediate freight-market signal. Its hire tracks the Baltic Capesize Index's five-route time-charter average, so that revenue shows large-vessel rate changes before they fully reach Diana's fixed-rate charters.

  • Himalaya Shipping competes with Diana Shipping's largest bulk carriers by renting Newcastlemax ships to charterers. Its mainly index-linked hire follows the Baltic five-route Capesize average plus a premium, making charter revenue a direct large-vessel rate signal—though temporary fixed-rate conversions can mute that exposure.

  • EuroDry Ltd. explicitly names Diana Shipping as a competitor; both earn charter revenue from customers moving iron ore, coal, grain and other dry cargoes worldwide. Watch EuroDry's average daily earnings per ship, expressed as a time-charter equivalent rate, rather than revenue alone: in 2025 that rate fell to $11,642 despite fleet utilization reaching 99.0%.

  • Globus Maritime Limited competes directly with Diana Shipping for customers hiring Kamsarmax and Ultramax ships to move dry-bulk cargoes worldwide. Its charter pricing in those two vessel classes is the relevant comparison for Diana, particularly where competition pressures long-term hire rates.

  • Navios Maritime Partners L.P. competes with Diana Shipping in renting dry-bulk ships to cargo customers, but also earns money carrying containers and oil, so its overall results are a less direct comparison. Watch its dry-bulk charter business: as of March 5, 2026, 51% of available dry-bulk days for 2026 remained exposed to market rates.

  • Pangaea Logistics Solutions Ltd. serves industrial customers moving the same dry-bulk commodities in vessel classes overlapping Diana Shipping's fleet, so both face the same cargo-demand backdrop. But Pangaea also handles loading, ports and voyage planning, and its ice-class routes have historically earned above-market margins, making those specialized earnings less representative of Diana's charter business.

  • CMB.TECH NV competes with Diana Shipping through Bocimar, which earns money transporting customers' iron ore, bauxite, coal and grain. Watch Bocimar's dry-bulk business rather than the group's total results, which also include oil, chemicals, containers and offshore crew-transfer services.
