PDF Solutions helps chip designers, manufacturers and equipment makers analyze manufacturing data, improve the share of chips that work correctly, and connect production equipment. Exensio analyzes data using analytics and AI, while CV measurement systems help customers identify manufacturing problems and improve yield. DirectScan inspects chips using electron beams.
Most revenue comes from software licenses, subscriptions, engineering services and fixed system fees. Equipment makers also pay to use Cimetrix software to connect their machines to factory systems, with an additional license fee for each machine shipped with the software. Customers of secureWISE pay according to the equipment connected to its secure remote-access network and the data transferred. Some CV contracts generate royalties called Gainshare, tied to customers’ wafer production or chip sales. These usage- and volume-based fees form a smaller revenue stream and depend on activity at customers’ covered equipment, sites and products.
A few large customers supply most revenue, so their spending and production decisions matter substantially. U.S. export controls restrict some sales and license renewals and limit business with Chinese manufacturers working on advanced chip processes.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
PDF Solutions depends on chip manufacturers’ spending on yield improvement and software, with Siemens and ASML also worth watching as competitors outside this list.
Onto Innovation and PDF Solutions compete for chip manufacturers’ spending on software that controls production and improves yields; each names the other as a competitor. Onto’s process-control software developments are the part of its inspection and measurement business to watch most closely.
KLA competes with PDF Solutions for chip manufacturers’ spending on systems that improve yields and inspect and measure chips during production. Its Semiconductor Process Control business is the relevant area to watch, rather than its PCB and component inspection business.
Synopsys competes directly with PDF Solutions in software sold to chip manufacturers to manage manufacturing and yields. Watch its chip-manufacturing software within Design Automation, rather than treating its broader simulation or pre-designed circuit business as the same market.
Applied Materials competes with PDF Solutions in manufacturing software and equipment that inspects and measures chips, all sold to chip manufacturers. Its process-control, inspection and measurement offerings are the closest overlap, rather than its full range of chipmaking equipment.
Cohu overlaps with PDF Solutions in tools sold for testing chips’ electrical behavior and analyzing manufacturing data. Watch Cohu’s AI-driven analytics and test and inspection systems; its recurring revenue also includes spares and interface products, so it is not a software-only measure.
Silvaco Group competes for semiconductor manufacturers’ process-improvement software spending, overlapping with PDF Solutions’ analytics and yield-improvement tools. Watch its FTCO software, which combines manufacturing and simulated data to let customers experiment without physical wafers—a digital twin of the manufacturing process.
FormFactor and PDF Solutions both face wafer-production and electrical-testing demand: FormFactor sells probes and probe stations, while PDF Solutions sells CV tools that measure chip electrical characteristics. Watch FormFactor’s probe-card and probe-station sales alongside PDF Solutions’ Gainshare revenue, which depends on customers’ wafer manufacturing volumes.
Camtek and PDF Solutions both depend on semiconductor manufacturers investing in yield control: Camtek sells wafer inspection and measurement systems, while PDF Solutions sells manufacturing analytics and characterization tools. Camtek’s systems span later wafer-processing stages through the start of assembly, making that part of manufacturers’ inspection spending worth watching.
FormFactor Inc. earningsFORM
FormFactor’s report will show whether wafer production and electrical-testing demand is strengthening, a signal for PDF Solutions’ revenue tied to customer usage.
Compare FormFactor’s probe-card and probe-station sales with PDF Solutions’ Volume-based revenue. If both strengthen, wafer production and electrical-testing activity may be picking up, supporting PDF Solutions’ usage-linked business; if both weaken, softer customer production may be weighing on that revenue. If FormFactor sales weaken but PDF Solutions’ Volume-based revenue holds, the sites and customers covered by PDF Solutions may be behaving differently. The two are not a one-to-one match, so PDF Solutions’ customers’ actual wafer volumes remain decisive.
Silvaco Group, Inc. earningsSVCO
Silvaco Group, Inc.’s report will show demand for manufacturing-improvement software, which competes with PDF Solutions’ analytics and yield-improvement tools for chipmakers’ budgets.
Watch Silvaco’s FTCO software performance alongside PDF Solutions’ broader Platform revenue. If FTCO strengthens and PDF Solutions’ Platform revenue also grows, spending on process-improvement software appears supported. If FTCO weakens while PDF Solutions grows, demand may differ by product and customer; that alone would not show that PDF Solutions took its business. The takeaway is whether spending on this type of software is broadening and whether PDF Solutions’ platform business is benefiting too.

PDF Solutions’ report will show whether it can turn software, systems and services sales into revenue from ongoing customer use while protecting its margins.
Read Platform revenue alongside Volume-based revenue, which includes Gainshare fees tied to customers’ wafer volumes. Growth in both, with gross margin holding or improving, would show that software and system deployments are leading to more customer use without serving costs eroding the gains. If Platform revenue grows but Volume-based revenue stalls, or gross margin falls, customer use or the cost of serving it is not keeping pace. The conclusion is whether growth is coming from both deployments and actual use, rather than relying on just one.
Industrial Production MoM (Oct)
PDF Solutions’ usage and Gainshare fees rise or fall with wafer production at covered customer sites, so this release tracks factory output and indicates whether customers may use more or less of those offerings.
Read stronger factory output as support for wafer volumes and usage or Gainshare fees at covered sites, and weaker output as a risk to those fees; the release does not establish what happened at PDF Solutions’ specific customer sites.
