Onto Innovation makes tools that measure semiconductor structures and films, inspect wafers and packages for defects, and help manufacturers adjust production processes to improve yield. Silicon wafer makers, chip fabricators and advanced-packaging manufacturers buy its equipment and analytical software. Systems and software generate most revenue; spare parts and services provide the rest. It also sells lithography systems used to form patterns in advanced packaging.
Equipment demand follows customers’ manufacturing investments. Advanced-node measurement tools are typically bought when chipmakers develop smaller chip structures and establish new production lines, with further purchases as capacity expands. Advanced-packaging inspection demand depends more on assembly volumes. Its IMPULSE measurement systems sit directly on wafer-processing equipment, so those sales also depend on a small group of equipment suppliers selling compatible machines.
Revenue is concentrated among a few large customers and comes mainly from Asia. Customers include Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Samsung Electronics and Toshiba. U.S. export controls restrict sales to certain customers in China and require additional checks and, in some cases, licenses before shipment; license delays or denials can prevent sales.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Onto Innovation’s results also hinge on memory-manufacturing investment by Samsung Electronics, which its filing identifies as a South Korean customer.
Camtek competes with Onto Innovation for advanced-packaging manufacturers’ spending on tools that inspect wafers and measure chip features. Watch Camtek’s advanced-packaging inspection business: assembly volumes drive demand for Onto’s inspection tools more than moves to smaller chip features do.
Nova competes with Onto Innovation to sell chipmakers tools that optically measure chip dimensions and thin films, including systems attached directly to production equipment. Nova’s wins in these measurements matter because customers invest heavily in selecting and integrating tools, making an incumbent vendor hard to displace.
KLA challenges Onto Innovation in two businesses: tools that measure semiconductor structures and tools that inspect advanced packaging, both sold to chip manufacturers. Watch KLA’s improvements in tool performance and productivity, which influence manufacturers’ choices between competing systems.
TSMC is a buyer of Onto Innovation’s tools and software for measuring and controlling chip production; it earns revenue by making chips from customers’ designs. Watch TSMC’s smaller-node development and capacity additions, since Onto’s advanced-node measurement tools are generally installed before production equipment, with further purchases as capacity needs grow.
Applied Materials and Onto Innovation both depend on chipmakers’ spending on new production lines: Applied sells equipment that processes wafers, while Onto sells tools that measure structures and inspect defects to control yield. Applied’s Semiconductor Systems business provides a view of that investment cycle, although Onto’s advanced-node measurement tools are generally installed before processing equipment.
Lam Research shares Onto Innovation’s exposure to foundry and memory manufacturers’ factory investment: Lam sells equipment that deposits layers, etches patterns and cleans wafers, while Onto sells tools that measure and control production. Watch Lam’s foundry and memory customer demand separately; Onto’s fiscal 2025 sales rose to NAND customers but fell to foundry and DRAM customers.
ASML and Onto Innovation benefit from chipmakers establishing smaller-node production lines: ASML sells systems that print patterns on silicon, while Onto sells tools that measure the resulting structures. Watch ASML’s advanced logic and DRAM customers’ adoption of EUV patterning systems, while remembering that Onto’s advanced-node tools are generally installed before production equipment.
Amkor’s packaging activity helps gauge demand for Onto Innovation’s inspection tools, though this tie does not establish Amkor as a buyer: Amkor charges chip companies for packaging and testing, while Onto sells equipment to packaging manufacturers. Watch Amkor’s Advanced Products sales as a window into packaging activity, since assembly volumes generally drive Onto’s packaging-inspection demand.
PDF Solutions competes with Onto Innovation for chipmakers’ spending on software that analyzes manufacturing data and helps improve the share of usable chips. Watch its Exensio analytics offering for developments in that rivalry; PDF’s broader Platform revenue also includes services and hardware-related fees, not just competing software.
Veeco competes with Onto Innovation in systems that print patterns for advanced packaging, and both sell equipment into semiconductor and compound-semiconductor manufacturing investment. Veeco’s advanced-packaging lithography business is the closest overlap to watch against Onto’s JetStep systems, rather than its equipment business as a whole.
Lam Research Corp earningsLRCX
Lam Research sells wafer-deposition, etch and cleaning equipment, so its report offers a read on foundry and memory investment that can inform demand for Onto Innovation's measurement and inspection tools.
Look separately at Lam Research's foundry and memory businesses. Stronger demand in both would suggest a healthier equipment-investment backdrop for the customers Onto serves; weaker demand would signal less momentum for those customers to add or update factory equipment. Lam sells wafer-processing tools and Onto sells process-control tools, so their orders need not move in step; the takeaway is the investment climate, not proof of an Onto order.
Amkor Technology Inc earningsAMKR
Amkor packages and tests chips for chip companies, and its Advanced Products business gives a window into packaging activity that can inform demand for Onto Innovation's packaging-inspection tools.
Watch whether Amkor's Advanced Products sales strengthen or weaken. Stronger sales would indicate a more supportive backdrop for equipment demand from advanced packaging activity, which could help Onto's inspection-tool business; weaker sales would make that demand signal less encouraging. Amkor's sales also reflect its own product mix and pricing, so they are not a direct measure of packaging volumes or Onto orders; the takeaway is how much packaging activity may support equipment demand.
KLA Corporation earningsKLAC
KLA and Onto Innovation both sell measurement and advanced-packaging inspection tools to chipmakers, so KLA's report shows demand and competitive pressure in markets they share.
Watch demand for KLA's process-control business alongside signs that customers value its tool performance and productivity. Strong demand or adoption would show support in markets the companies share, but also a stronger rival for Onto when customers choose where to spend; weaker demand would soften the competitive signal but could reflect a broader slowdown, not Onto winning orders. The takeaway is whether the pressure comes from the market or a rival gaining ground.
Veeco Instruments Inc earningsVECO
Veeco's advanced-packaging lithography systems compete with Onto Innovation's JetStep systems for customer spending, and its report will show whether demand in that shared market is supporting a rival.
Focus on Veeco's advanced-packaging lithography business, not all of its equipment sales as one signal. Strength there would show that packaging manufacturers' spending supports a product that competes directly with JetStep, and that Onto faces a stronger rival for that budget; weakness would soften the competitive signal but could also reflect a weaker market. The takeaway is the condition of JetStep's lithography niche and its competitive pressure, not Onto's actual orders.
Onto Innovation Inc. earningsThis company
Onto Innovation sells measurement, inspection and lithography tools and software to chipmakers, and this report will show whether systems-and-software sales are supporting revenue without more pressure on gross margin.
Read systems-and-software revenue alongside gross margin. Revenue growth with a stable or improving margin would suggest shipments are translating into sales without greater cost drag; weaker revenue or a falling margin would point to pressure from demand, product mix or costs. Those figures alone will not identify which customers or tools drove the change, so the key conclusion is whether sales growth is coming with easing cost pressure.
Camtek Ltd earningsCAMT
Camtek competes with Onto Innovation for advanced-packaging inspection spending, and its report will show activity in that market as well as how a direct rival is doing.
Read Camtek's advanced-packaging inspection business as a signal about both market demand and competition. Strength there would suggest packaging manufacturers are supporting inspection-tool spending, while also showing that Camtek may be competing for the same customer budgets as Onto; weakness could mean the market is slowing, not that Onto is winning share. The takeaway is whether the shared market is growing or a rival is gaining ground.
Industrial Production MoM (Oct)
Industrial production tracks output from factories, mines and utilities; stronger semiconductor-factory activity can lead Onto Innovation’s customers to expand capacity and buy more process-control systems, while weaker activity can delay purchases and reduce systems revenue.
If output is rising, it suggests firmer industrial activity that may encourage semiconductor makers to expand capacity and buy Onto Innovation systems; falling output suggests weaker activity that may lead them to defer purchases.
