Synopsys helps semiconductor and electronics companies design chips and check that they will work before manufacturing. Electronic design automation (EDA) generates most of its revenue: customers pay to use design and verification software, typically through subscriptions that include updates and support. It also sells or leases hardware that lets engineers test chip designs before physical chips are available.
Customers can also license Synopsys’s pre-designed circuits and incorporate them into their own chips rather than design every component themselves. This Design IP business is its next-largest revenue source, charging fees per design and sometimes royalties. Its Ansys software serves a broader range of industries, letting engineers simulate how products behave under conditions such as heat, mechanical forces and fluid flow. Customers pay through subscriptions or perpetual licenses with support and updates.
Much of the business depends on customers starting new chip-design projects, and a relatively small group of large customers supplies a large portion of revenue. Synopsys also works with major chip foundries to keep its tools and circuit designs compatible with their manufacturing processes. Export controls and sanctions restrict where and to whom it can supply certain products, services and technology.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Cadence competes with Synopsys for semiconductor and electronics companies’ spending on chip-design and verification software, hardware and ready-made circuit designs, or semiconductor IP. Watch Cadence’s Core EDA and Semiconductor IP business for competition in the products those customers also buy from Synopsys.
Silvaco Group, Inc. competes with Synopsys for chipmakers’ purchases of semiconductor design and simulation software and ready-made interface, library and embedded-memory circuits, or IP. Its news on those software and IP products is more relevant to Synopsys’s competitive position than its broader product lineup.
Keysight and Synopsys both draw on electronics and semiconductor development budgets: engineers buy Keysight’s hardware, software and services to design and validate products, and Synopsys’s tools to design and simulate them. Watch Keysight’s research-and-development business, which provides most of its revenue, for signs of spending in the customer markets they share.
PDF Solutions Inc and Synopsys both serve chipmakers investing in bringing complex manufacturing processes into production: PDF Solutions measures chip characteristics and analyzes yield, while Synopsys sells manufacturing-related design tools. Watch PDF Solutions’s CV systems for characterization and yield improvement as a concrete view of that investment.
Cadence Design Systems earningsCDNS
Cadence’s report will show how chipmakers are spending on design tools and semiconductor IP, markets where it competes with Synopsys for customers.
Read Cadence’s Core EDA and Semiconductor IP businesses together. Growth in both would show that chipmakers are still buying design tools and IP that Synopsys also sells, while Cadence expands in those markets; weakness would point more to softer customer demand, not prove that Synopsys is winning share.
PDF Solutions Inc earningsPDFS
PDF Solutions Inc’s report will show whether chipmakers are investing in process characterization and yield improvement, spending that also matters to Synopsys’s manufacturing-related design tools.
Watch PDF Solutions Inc’s CV systems business and its comments on customer spending for process characterization and yield improvement. Strength would indicate that chipmakers are still funding efforts to bring complex processes into production, a supportive setting for Synopsys’s related manufacturing-design tools; weakness could signal delayed or reduced investment, but would not directly establish a change in Synopsys sales.
Keysight Technologies, Inc. earningsKEYS
Keysight’s report will show whether electronics and semiconductor customers are still funding research and development tools, budgets that also support Synopsys’s design and simulation products.
Watch demand in Keysight’s research-and-development business and its comments on customer purchases and spending. Continued strength would suggest that electronics and semiconductor customers shared by the two companies are still funding development tools, supporting demand for Synopsys’s design and simulation products; weakness could mean customer cuts or delays also limit Synopsys’s sales opportunities, but it is not a direct measure of Synopsys demand.
Synopsys Inc earningsThis company
Synopsys’s report will show whether growth in chip-design automation can continue while its Design IP business recovers from weakness.
Read Design Automation and Design IP revenue together, then check each segment’s adjusted operating margin. Growth in Design Automation alongside stabilizing Design IP revenue and steady margins would show both businesses supporting Synopsys; if Design IP revenue keeps falling and margins narrow even as Design Automation grows, strength in one segment is not making up for weakness in the other.
