Company

Company overview

Pioneer Bancorp conducts its main business through Pioneer Bank, National Association, serving households, businesses and local governments in New York’s Capital Region. The bank uses customer deposits, supplemented by borrowings, to fund loans and investments. Borrowers pay interest, and the bank’s main income is what remains after paying interest on its funding. Banking charges, insurance services through Pioneer Insurance Agency and wealth management through Pioneer Financial Services provide additional fee and commission income.

Residential mortgages are the largest part of its loan portfolio, followed by commercial real estate. The bank does not originate residential mortgages in-house: Homestead Funding Corp. underwrites, processes, closes and funds them, and Pioneer chooses which loans to buy. It pays for the loans and receives no referral fee. Loans acquired through Homestead make up a substantial part of the portfolio, making that relationship important to continued mortgage purchases.

The business depends on retaining deposits, including substantial balances from local governments, and keeping lending income above funding costs as interest rates change. Most loans are secured by real estate, largely in its local market, tying repayment and collateral values to the region’s economy and property market. Regulatory capital rules can restrict dividends and share repurchases if required capital buffers are not maintained.

Pioneer's results hinge on property and business credit and deposit pricing in New York’s Capital Region, where KeyBank, Citizens Bank and TD Bank are also important competitors to watch.

  • Greene County Bancorp competes with Pioneer for home mortgages, commercial property loans and municipal and retail deposits in overlapping Capital District counties. Its interest income from home and commercial property borrowers is the line to watch for conditions in lending markets Pioneer also serves.

  • M&T Bank competes directly with Pioneer for Capital Region deposits and serves overlapping small-business, mortgage and wealth-management customers. Watch its small-business lending and deposit offerings: Pioneer seeks business borrowers who also bring deposits and buy other services.

  • Rhinebeck Bancorp and Pioneer both lend to property and business borrowers in eastern New York, exposing them to nearby local economies. Rhinebeck’s property and business lending is the closer comparison for Pioneer; its considerably greater automobile lending makes its overall loan results less directly comparable.

  • Bank of America’s substantial presence in Pioneer’s six-county market puts it in competition for deposits and banking customers, including consumers and small businesses. Its deposit offerings matter to Pioneer’s ability to retain the low-cost funding that supports its lending income.

  • JPMorgan Chase competes with Pioneer for deposits and consumer and business banking customers across Pioneer’s six-county market. Its services for consumers and small businesses are the relevant part to watch, rather than its global investment-banking business.
