Company

Company overview

Greene County Bancorp is the holding company for the Bank of Greene County, serving New York’s Hudson Valley and Capital District. The bank takes deposits from households, businesses and municipalities and uses the money primarily to make loans. Borrowers’ interest payments on residential and commercial property mortgages provide most of its revenue. It generally keeps the mortgages it originates rather than selling them, earning interest over their life.

The bank also invests in securities, including municipal debt and mortgage-backed securities. Greene County Commercial Bank supplies another source of funding by attracting deposits from local municipalities. The group’s earnings depend chiefly on the interest it collects from loans and securities after paying interest on deposits and borrowings.

The business is closely tied to its local market: borrowers’ ability to repay depends substantially on employment and economic conditions in Greene County and nearby counties. Interest rates and competitors’ deposit rates affect both funding costs and its ability to retain deposits. The group and its banks must also meet regulatory capital requirements.

  • Pioneer Bancorp competes with Greene County Bancorp for municipal and household deposits and borrowers financing commercial properties in overlapping New York Capital Region counties. Watch Pioneer's municipal deposits: Greene County's municipal-deposit bank held $1.2 billion at June 30, 2026, making local governments an important funding source.

  • Arrow Financial, through Arrow Bank, competes with Greene County Bancorp for deposits and for customers borrowing to buy property or fund small businesses in New York's Capital Region, including Saratoga County. Its mortgage and small-business lending results are the parts to watch for competition facing Greene County.

  • Rhinebeck Bancorp competes with Greene County Bancorp for Hudson Valley deposits and customers borrowing against commercial properties. Both take in deposits and lend to property borrowers, so Rhinebeck's commercial property lending is the business to watch for competition facing Greene County.
