Company

Company overview

Olin’s largest business supplies industrial customers with chlorine, caustic soda and chemicals made from them. It sells some output directly and uses some chlorine to make downstream products, including epoxy resins, which it sells to users and distributors. Chlorine, caustic soda and their derivatives account for most revenue; epoxy materials provide a smaller, connected source of sales. Some chemical products go to relatively few large industrial users, but Olin does not depend on one customer for a dominant share of sales.

Winchester gives Olin a separate ammunition business. It sells ammunition for recreational shooting and hunting through dealers and retailers, supplies military and law-enforcement customers, and earns revenue from contracted project services for the U.S. Army.

The chemical business depends heavily on electricity and on finding outlets for both chlorine and caustic soda: its plants produce them together in a fixed ratio. Because Olin cannot store large quantities of chlorine, weak chlorine demand can also limit caustic soda production. Its epoxy operations consume chlorine and help provide an outlet. Regulation also limits production and sales. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s asbestos ban affects a significant part of Olin’s chlorine capacity and could raise costs or force closures; ammunition rules can restrict manufacturing, sales and exports.

Beyond this list, watch OxyChem, now owned by Berkshire Hathaway, for Olin’s chlor-alkali pricing rivalry, and ammunition rival The Kinetic Group for military and commercial ammunition demand.

  • Westlake Corporation competes with Olin for industrial and consumer-market sales of chlor-alkali chemicals, chlorinated derivatives, vinyl intermediates and epoxy products. Watch its Performance and Essential Materials business for conditions across these overlapping products, rather than its building-products business.

  • Huntsman competes with Olin to sell epoxy resins, formulated materials and curing agents to industrial manufacturers. Its Advanced Materials business is the relevant window into that competition, with epoxy formulations and agents that help resins harden.

  • Dow is both a supplier and a customer of Olin: under long-term arrangements, it sells Olin ethylene and buys Olin’s chlorine. Their large industrial chemical businesses also share exposure to industrial demand and petrochemical operating rates.

  • Braskem offers Olin a customer outlet for EDC, a chemical used to make vinyl chloride: Olin announced an arrangement to supply it for Braskem’s Brazilian chlor-alkali and vinyl assets. Watch the transformation of those assets for developments tied to this outlet for Olin’s EDC sales.

  • LyondellBasell’s bulk petrochemical sales face industrial-demand cycles and global chemical-capacity pressure related to those facing Olin’s chemical intermediates. Its sales of polyethylene, polypropylene and intermediate chemicals offer a read on that broader backdrop, rather than Olin’s specific chlorine or epoxy markets.

  • AdvanSix competes with Olin in sales of phenol and acetone to outside customers; both make these chemicals within integrated production chains. Watch AdvanSix’s chemical-intermediate sales to customers making products such as coatings, adhesives and resins for a view of demand relevant to Olin’s external phenol and acetone sales.
