Company overview

Microvast Holdings supplies batteries that vehicle manufacturers build into electric trucks, buses and other commercial and specialty vehicles. It makes its own battery materials, cells and complete systems, working with vehicle and drivetrain manufacturers to develop and qualify products before commercial orders begin. These vehicle manufacturers are its primary customers; it also sells battery components to other manufacturers and develops energy-storage systems using its vehicle-battery technology.

Winning a vehicle program can take years of development and testing. Long-term supply agreements generally do not require customers to buy a minimum quantity: purchase orders establish the actual commitments. A handful of customers provides most of its revenue, so sales depend heavily on those customers moving their vehicles into production and continuing to order batteries.

Its Huzhou, China factory is the main source of high-volume products. Construction of its planned Clarksville, Tennessee cell factory remains suspended for lack of funding, limiting U.S. expansion. Imported components can also prevent its batteries from meeting Buy America requirements for certain federally funded transit customers. Beyond expansion, Microvast needs additional funding for ongoing operations and obligations; its funding plans include refinancing borrowings and selling shares.

Moat

MVST says it has a moat. Does it hold up?

Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.

Microvast’s results hinge mainly on commercial-vehicle battery orders and factory utilization; major battery rivals CATL and BYD are missing from this list.

  • Electrovaya competes with Microvast in long-life lithium-ion battery systems for industrial and heavy-duty electric vehicles, selling to vehicle makers, fleet operators and industrial customers. Its material-handling battery sales show demand in an industrial market adjacent to Microvast’s mainly commercial-vehicle customer base.

  • Flux Power competes with Microvast for industrial and specialty electric-vehicle battery business, supplying packs for forklifts, industrial equipment and airport ground-support equipment. Its new forklift-maker approval in fiscal 2026 is a concrete sign of access to vehicle manufacturers, the customer group Microvast primarily serves.

  • EnerSys competes with Microvast in batteries for automated guided vehicles and other industrial electric vehicles, and both also offer stationary storage. Its Motive Power business, which sells batteries and chargers for industrial vehicles, is the part of its results most closely tied to this overlap.

  • Fluence competes with Microvast for stationary battery-storage deployments, selling systems that combine hardware and software for utility-scale and power-grid applications. Its contracted energy-storage backlog is the concrete measure to watch for demand in this shared market.

  • SES AI explicitly names Microvast as a competing energy-storage supplier; both sell battery-storage systems, while SES also supplies battery cells. Watch its storage products’ battery-health and safety software, which SES says differentiates its offering in this shared market.

  • Tesla competes with Microvast in energy-storage systems, and Microvast also identifies Tesla’s battery activities as competition that could pressure battery prices and margins. Tesla’s energy generation and storage business is the relevant line to watch, rather than its car sales.

  • Ballard offers vehicle makers fuel-cell power systems for buses, trucks, rail and marine applications, competing with Microvast’s batteries as an electrification choice. Purchases by Ballard’s few major customers are worth watching: their demand determines much of its revenue and shows uptake of this alternative power system.

Agenda

tomorrowWed, Oct 21

  1. Time to be announced

    Tesla, Inc. earningsTSLA

Tesla’s energy-storage results will show how demand and price competition are moving in the stationary battery market it shares with Microvast, shaping Microvast’s sales opportunities and margins.

  2. 10:30 AMET

EIA Crude Oil Stocks Change (Oct/16)

US crude oil and gasoline stock levels indicate whether fuel supply is tightening or loosening; if they push oil prices lower, Microvast says electric-vehicle batteries may become less attractive to buyers, potentially weakening demand for its battery systems.

    Fed Interest Rate Decision

Fed decisions shape borrowing costs for Microvast, whose bank loans and $140.9 million convertible loan priced at Term SOFR plus a 9.75% margin can make interest expense rise or fall as rates change.
