Company overview

Intuitive Machines helps customers deliver cargo to the Moon, deploy satellites and communicate with spacecraft. NASA buys lunar cargo delivery, engineering and communications work; defense and commercial customers buy satellites and related services. Its acquired Lanteris business builds satellite platforms, including for L3Harris on Space Development Agency programs. Most near-term revenue comes from customer-funded construction and delivery contracts, many tied to individual missions and milestones. It also earns from network and mission-operation services.

NASA is a significant customer, and recent revenue has been heavily concentrated in one customer. The business depends on continued government funding and completing contracted work; government customers can terminate contracts for convenience. Lunar missions also rely on a single launch-service provider.

The company aims to earn more recurring revenue by operating deployed communications and other space infrastructure, rather than stopping at delivery. That remains dependent on successful deployment and customer adoption: its NASA Near Space Network lunar services cannot begin until a satellite reaches lunar orbit. U.S. launches and spacecraft operations require FAA and FCC approvals, while export controls can restrict foreign launch arrangements and technology transfers.

Intuitive Machines’ results depend heavily on NASA funding and mission execution; privately held Astrobotic is another direct rival for lunar cargo delivery contracts.

  • Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost lander competes with Intuitive Machines’ landers to deliver cargo to the Moon for NASA under Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS). Watch NASA’s delivery contract awards to Blue Ghost for the clearest sign of this rivalry.

  • Rocket Lab competes with Intuitive Machines for national-security customers that pay for spacecraft construction and mission services. Its spacecraft manufacturing and in-orbit operations work is the relevant business to watch, rather than its rocket launches alone.

  • York Space Systems Inc. competes with Intuitive Machines to supply defense spacecraft and the ground and in-orbit services that keep them operating. Substantially all of York’s revenue comes from defense markets, making its results particularly sensitive to the government spending behind this business.

  • Redwire overlaps with Intuitive Machines in selling spacecraft and space infrastructure to civil, national-security and commercial customers. Watch Redwire’s Space business rather than its separate Defense Tech business for this overlap.

  • L3Harris pays Intuitive Machines’ subsidiary Lanteris for the spacecraft platforms used in the Space Development Agency’s missile-tracking satellites. Watch progress on those programs: Lanteris won contracts for 16 platforms in 2022 and 18 more in 2024, both before its acquisition.

  • Northrop Grumman competes with Intuitive Machines to build civil, defense and commercial geostationary spacecraft, but also works on its NASA lunar terrain vehicle team. Its role therefore differs by program: a rival for spacecraft customers, a teammate on the lunar vehicle.

  • Lockheed Martin competes with Intuitive Machines for satellite manufacturing and larger civil and national-security space contracts, serving mainly U.S. government agencies and allies. Watch its Space business and larger mission awards, including crewed lunar work, for the competition relevant to Intuitive Machines.

  • Voyager Technologies, Inc. competes with Intuitive Machines to supply civil space customers with space systems and mission services. Its Space Solutions work is the relevant overlap, rather than treating all of Voyager’s defense and space-station activities as the same competition.

  • Planet Labs competes with Intuitive Machines in satellite manufacturing and services, although it mainly sells Earth-imagery data subscriptions to government and commercial customers. Its long-term satellite-services contracts with large government and enterprise customers are the closer comparison, rather than its recurring imagery revenue.

  • Boeing competes with Intuitive Machines to build civil spacecraft, while also joining its NASA lunar terrain vehicle team. Watch its space work and lunar vehicle participation for this relationship, not the commercial jets it sells to airlines.
