Company

Company overview

Customers shop through JD.com’s apps and websites for electronics, home appliances and general merchandise. Unlike a marketplace that only connects buyers and sellers, JD.com buys and holds inventory for its direct retail business, which supplies most of its revenue. Its warehouse network covers almost all counties and districts in China, and it delivers most orders itself, with outside couriers supplementing its network.

Third-party merchants also sell on JD.com’s marketplace, paying sales commissions and fees for services such as marketing and logistics. Suppliers and other partners buy digital marketing services too. JD Logistics serves both the group’s retail operations and outside businesses, which pay it to manage warehousing, transportation and delivery across their supply chains.

The business depends heavily on Chinese consumer spending, sourcing products customers want at competitive prices, favorable supplier pricing and payment terms, and matching inventory to demand. Reliable delivery is central to the shopping experience. China’s foreign-ownership restrictions also shape its operations: JD.com controls its mainland websites and certain other restricted businesses through contracts with locally owned entities rather than owning those entities. Its ability to run those businesses and receive their economic benefits depends on those arrangements.

JD’s results hinge on Chinese retail demand and delivery economics; Suning.com is another appliance-retail rival to watch beyond this list.

  • Alibaba’s Taobao and Tmall vie with JD for Chinese online shoppers, merchants and the advertising budgets merchants pay to reach buyers. Watch Alibaba’s merchant marketing revenue for signs of competition facing JD’s retail advertising business.

  • PDD’s Pinduoduo competes with JD for Chinese online shoppers and merchants by offering lower prices to buyers who shop together. Merchants pay PDD fees on completed sales, making its transaction-service revenue a signal to watch for competition with JD’s direct retail and merchant marketplace.

  • Vipshop’s deeply discounted branded apparel, beauty products and other merchandise compete for Chinese shoppers’ spending with JD’s general merchandise. Its online retail revenue is the line to watch for competition in these categories, rather than JD’s electronics and appliances.

  • ZTO Express and JD Logistics compete for paid parcel deliveries in China, while both depend on e-commerce shipment volumes and delivery pricing. Watch ZTO’s domestic express business for clues to the parcel demand and delivery economics facing JD’s logistics services.

  • ATRenew’s Paipai competes for JD’s electronics shoppers by selling used devices and charging sellers transaction commissions, while JD entities held 36.2% of ATRenew’s voting power as of February 28, 2026. Watch Paipai’s consumer electronics orders: a substantial portion of its value-seeking buyers come through JD’s platform portals.

  • Walmart’s China stores and Sam’s Club compete with JD’s retail business for Chinese households’ spending on groceries and general merchandise.
