ORIX Corporation lends to companies and individuals and buys assets that businesses need, such as vehicles, equipment and aircraft, to lease to them. Borrowers pay interest and lessees pay for using the assets. ORIX funds these activities through borrowings, capital markets and deposits, seeking to earn more than its funding costs.
It also owns and operates businesses rather than only financing them. These include real estate, renewable energy and airport operations, including Kansai International Airport. It manages assets for outside investors for fees and invests in companies with the aim of improving them and earning gains when it sells. Its life-insurance business collects premiums and earns investment income. Services provide the largest revenue stream, followed by operating leases and life-insurance premiums and related investment income.
Most revenue comes from Japan, although ORIX also operates across Asia, the Americas, Europe and Australia. No single customer supplies a large share of total revenue. The business depends on access to funding at an acceptable cost, customers making payments, and the income and resale value of its assets and investments. Regulatory capital requirements also restrict part of the capital in its banking and life-insurance operations.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group competes with ORIX to finance Japanese businesses, lease assets to customers and lend to consumers, exposing both to borrowing demand, funding costs and credit quality. Watch its Japanese corporate and consumer lending results for clues to conditions facing ORIX’s financing businesses.
Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group overlaps with ORIX in lending to businesses and consumers, leasing assets and managing clients’ investments. Its Japanese lending and leasing results offer a comparison for ORIX as both face changes in demand, funding costs and credit quality.
Mizuho Financial Group and ORIX both finance Japanese individuals and businesses and manage clients’ investments, sharing exposure to borrowing demand and credit quality. Mizuho’s lending to small and medium-sized businesses is a useful comparison for ORIX’s domestic SME financing business.
Nomura Holdings and ORIX both manage stocks, bonds and alternative investments for institutional investors and financial intermediaries, tying their asset-management businesses to investment markets and client demand. Watch Nomura’s assets under management and management fees as a comparison for ORIX’s effort to earn fees by managing other investors’ assets.

Nomura’s report will show whether investors are keeping assets with it and generating management fees, a market comparison for ORIX’s asset-management business.
Read Nomura’s assets under management alongside its management fees. If both rise, client assets and fee income are expanding, a supportive market signal for ORIX’s business of managing others’ assets for fees. If assets or fees fall, conditions or demand for this kind of fee business are weakening; that does not establish ORIX’s own results.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
For ORIX, the Fed’s rate decision matters because it changes the cost of funding US lending and leasing and the interest earned on assets whose rates move with the market, affecting the spread between what ORIX earns and pays.

If it comes in above expectations
Higher rates can raise ORIX’s funding costs on debt that reprices and new borrowing, squeezing the spread on US loans and leases; floating-rate assets may also earn more, partly offsetting that pressure.
If it comes in below expectations
Lower rates can ease ORIX’s funding costs on repricing debt and new borrowing, supporting the spread on US loans and leases, but may reduce returns on floating-rate assets.

ORIX’s report will show whether income from lending and leasing is keeping pace with funding costs, and whether service fees are still growing.
Read finance revenues alongside interest expense, then check services income. If finance revenues grow faster than interest expense and services income also rises, lending and leasing spreads and fee businesses are both supporting operations. If interest expense grows faster or services income weakens, those more recurring sources offer less support, making swings in investment gains more consequential.
Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc earningsSMFG
Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group’s report will show Japanese business and consumer borrowing demand and repayment conditions in a market shared with ORIX’s financing businesses.
Look at Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group’s Japanese corporate and consumer lending alongside credit quality. Growing lending with sound repayments would suggest borrowing demand and repayment conditions are supportive for ORIX’s financing businesses; weaker lending or deteriorating credit quality would point to less supportive demand or repayment conditions than loan growth alone might suggest.
