Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) serves individuals, businesses and institutional investors in Japan and overseas through subsidiaries including MUFG Bank. Deposits provide most of its funding. It lends to customers and holds interest-earning investments, earning the difference between the interest it receives and its funding costs. Overseas operations generate most of its net interest income, although most assets and loans are tied to Japan.
Customer banking and investment services account for most revenue. Alongside lending, MUFG helps companies raise financing and make payments, and helps customers invest and manage wealth. Customers pay fees for these services; Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking also earns fees for managing and administering pension and investment funds.
MUFG owns a substantial minority stake in Morgan Stanley and works with it through Japanese securities joint ventures and corporate finance operations in the United States. Morgan Stanley contributes a significant share of MUFG’s earnings, but MUFG does not control it.
The business depends on retaining deposits, borrowers repaying loans and the gap between lending and funding rates. Its large Japanese lending and investment portfolios make Japanese economic conditions and interest rates especially important. Regulatory capital, leverage and liquidity requirements constrain its operations; falling below capital requirements can restrict dividends and buybacks or lead to suspension of operations.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group competes with MUFG for Japanese individuals and companies buying banking, securities and consumer-finance services, so Japanese interest rates and loan demand matter to both. Its Japanese retail and corporate banking results offer a comparison for MUFG’s loan-and-deposit business.
Mizuho Financial Group competes with MUFG for customers paying for Japanese banking, trust and securities services, and for companies seeking financing worldwide. Its services for Japanese individuals and smaller businesses make it a useful comparison for MUFG’s lending and wealth-management operations.
Morgan Stanley’s earnings feed directly into MUFG’s results: MUFG held about 23.9% of its voting rights as of March 31, 2026, and the two share Japanese securities ventures serving investment-banking and securities clients. Watch Morgan Stanley’s earnings from advising, trading and managing investments for corporations, institutions and individuals, because MUFG records its share of those profits under equity-method accounting.
Nomura Holdings competes with MUFG for individual and institutional investment customers in Japanese securities, wealth management and asset management. Watch Nomura’s assets under management and management fees: it charges investors mainly according to the assets it manages, while growth in managed assets also supports MUFG’s fee business.
HSBC Holdings competes with MUFG to finance multinational companies, handle their cross-border payments and exchange currencies through Asian and global networks. Watch HSBC’s corporate foreign-exchange revenue, which helped drive its 2025 revenue growth and overlaps with a fee-earning business at MUFG.
HSBC Holdings PLC earningsHSBC
HSBC's report will show whether revenue from foreign-exchange services for multinational companies is strengthening, in a business that overlaps with MUFG's cross-border services.
Read HSBC's corporate foreign-exchange revenue alongside fees from its other corporate services. If both strengthen, multinational customers are supporting a broader pool of fee income that MUFG also competes for. If foreign-exchange revenue weakens while other fees hold up, softness may be concentrated in demand or pricing for that service. Neither result alone shows how much business MUFG won.
Nomura Holdings, Inc earningsNMR
Nomura's report will show whether assets entrusted by investment customers are supporting management-fee income, a business that competes with MUFG's asset-management and wealth services.
Read Nomura's assets under management alongside its management fees. If both grow, more customer assets are translating into fees, a sign of support for the investment customers MUFG also serves. If assets grow but fees do not keep pace, the asset mix or fees earned per asset may be weaker, so industry asset growth is not translating into as much income.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
MUFG earns interest on loans and other assets and pays interest on deposits and borrowings, so U.S. rate decisions can change both its interest income and funding costs.

If it comes in above expectations
If the Fed sets rates above expectations, MUFG may earn more on U.S.-related lending and other interest-earning assets as they reprice, but its deposit and borrowing costs may also rise, limiting the net gain.
If it comes in below expectations
If the Fed sets rates below expectations, MUFG may earn less as U.S.-related lending and other interest-earning assets reprice, while lower deposit and borrowing costs may partly offset the decline.
Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Inc. earningsThis company
MUFG earns from lending and customer-service fees, and this report will show whether those revenues are keeping ahead of funding, operating and credit costs.
Read net interest income—the interest MUFG earns on loans and other assets, minus interest paid on deposits and other funding—alongside fee income, operating expenses and credit-loss provisions. Growth in interest and fee income without a similar rise in costs would show that lending and customer services are turning into more profit. If interest income is squeezed while fees stall and expenses or credit losses rise, core profitability is under pressure; volatile trading or securities gains would not settle that question.
Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Inc earningsSMFG
Sumitomo Mitsui's report will show whether income from Japanese lending is keeping ahead of deposit funding costs, a read-through for MUFG's similar banking business.
Read Sumitomo Mitsui's Japanese loan growth alongside changes in net interest income and deposit-funding costs; compare the direction, not the banks' raw totals. If lending lifts interest income while funding costs stay contained, Japanese borrowing demand and rates are supporting banks, including MUFG. If loans grow but net interest income stalls, or deposit costs rise faster, funding is eating into the benefit of lending.
Morgan Stanley earningsMS
Morgan Stanley's results affect the share of its earnings MUFG records, but do not by themselves show how MUFG's Japanese securities ventures performed.
Read Morgan Stanley's overall profit alongside the equity-method income MUFG reports—its share of an investee's profit based on its ownership. If Morgan Stanley's profit strengthens and MUFG's reported contribution rises with it, the investment is adding more to MUFG's earnings; if both weaken, that contribution shrinks. Morgan Stanley's global results alone do not establish whether MUFG's separate Japanese securities ventures improved or deteriorated.
