Company

Company overview

Innoviz Technologies supplies vehicle makers and automotive suppliers with sensors that use laser light to measure distances, known as LiDAR, and software that turns the readings into information for automated-driving systems. Customers pay for sensors, components and engineering work to prepare their programs for production. Engineering services currently bring in more revenue than hardware sales. InnovizTwo is a key automotive platform; InnovizSMART serves newer markets such as security, traffic management and robotics, where initial commercial sales have begun.

The business depends heavily on Volkswagen programs through Cariad SE, Mobileye programs and the recently announced Daimler Truck North America program. Being selected for a vehicle program does not guarantee production orders: revenue depends on customers completing integration and bringing vehicles to market.

Innoviz uses contract manufacturers and is still building its ability to supply at scale; it has not yet manufactured LiDAR at mass-production scale for any program. Customer deployment also depends on autonomous-vehicle rules, which differ across markets and can restrict where vehicles using its products operate.

Moat

INVZ says it has a moat. Does it hold up?

Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.

Innoviz’s results hinge on LiDAR program development and production ramp-ups at Volkswagen, BMW, Mobileye and Daimler Truck, so watch those customers even though several are absent from this list.

  • Hesai competes with Innoviz for automakers’ and major automotive suppliers’ spending on LiDAR for driver assistance and autonomous driving, putting Innoviz’s sales and margins under pressure. Watch adoption of Hesai’s AT and ET sensors for Level 2 and Level 3 systems.

  • Innoviz depends on Mobileye’s Drive program for a significant source of current and projected revenue: Mobileye selected InnovizTwo LiDAR for that autonomous-driving platform. Watch Drive’s progress specifically, since substantially all of Mobileye’s fiscal 2025 revenue came from commercially deployed driver-assistance solutions.

  • Aeva competes with Innoviz for automotive and industrial customers’ LiDAR and development spending. Nearly all of Aeva’s revenue since inception has come from partnerships and development arrangements supplying prototypes and engineering work, so watch whether those programs yield production orders rather than treating development revenue as proof of commercial adoption.

  • MicroVision competes with Innoviz to sell LiDAR sensors, software and engineering services to automakers and major automotive suppliers building advanced driving systems. Watch its high-volume automotive supply agreements and anticipated production royalties for evidence that customers are moving toward production.

  • Ouster competes with Innoviz for customers buying LiDAR and software that interprets sensor data in automotive, robotics and smart infrastructure. Its Gemini and BlueCity software business is worth watching alongside InnovizSMART’s push into robotics and intelligent traffic management.

  • AEye competes with Innoviz for automakers’ and major automotive suppliers’ purchases of LiDAR, software and development services. Watch its customer development contracts, which pay for software changes, customized scanning and improved interpretation of sensor data.

  • Magna both makes InnovizOne LiDAR for BMW’s Level 3 program and buys the components from Innoviz, tying Innoviz’s component sales to that production program. Watch BMW-program manufacturing progress at Magna, rather than Magna’s broad sales of vehicle parts and contract-built vehicles to automakers.

  • Arbe offers high-resolution radar as a competing sensing choice to Innoviz’s LiDAR for automakers and major automotive suppliers. It primarily sells radar chipsets to suppliers that build radar systems for automakers, making chipset adoption by those suppliers the business to watch.
