Company

Company overview

International Money Express, known as Intermex, collects money from senders and makes it available to recipients abroad, usually within minutes. Its core business serves people sending money from the United States to Latin America and the Caribbean, especially Mexico and Guatemala. Customers use independent retail agents, company stores or digital channels; recipients collect through local paying agents or, in selected countries, receive funds into accounts or mobile wallets.

Senders pay transaction fees, which Intermex shares with the agents and digital partners handling the transfer. These fees supply most of its revenue. It also earns foreign-exchange income from the difference between customer exchange rates and the wholesale rates it obtains on certain transfers. Digital partners separately pay to use its transfer software, licenses and payout network, but most revenue still comes through sending agents.

The business depends on customers’ ability and willingness to send money abroad and on keeping its collection and payout networks intact. Grupo Elektra is its largest paying agent and handles a substantial share of transfers. Banking transactions also rely heavily on Wells Fargo, Bank of America and U.S. Bank. Intermex must maintain money-transmitter licenses, meet anti-money-laundering and sanctions requirements, and hold the required net worth and liquid assets to cover unpaid transfers.

Intermex’s results hinge on U.S.-to-Latin America remittance demand, especially Mexico, and on access to recipients through Grupo Elektra, its largest paying agent.

  • Western Union competes with Intermex to help consumers send money across borders and to recruit remittance agents, but its agreement to acquire Intermex also makes merger news directly relevant to holders. Watch closing delays: Intermex says uncertainty could lead customers and agents to switch providers or renegotiate their relationships.

  • Remitly Global, Inc. competes with Intermex for people sending money internationally, charging customers transaction fees and earning a margin on currency exchange through its digital transfer service. Watch Remitly’s active customers and send volume for signs of digital competition as Intermex’s own digital channels grow faster than its agent and store channels.

  • Euronet Worldwide competes with Intermex to handle consumers’ cross-border transfers, but its ATM services for banks and consumers and content distribution through retailers make its overall results a less direct comparison. Watch its Money Transfer revenue instead: that business accounted for approximately 42% of Euronet’s consolidated revenue in 2025.
