Hawthorn Bancshars Inc. is the holding company for Hawthorn Bank, which serves individuals and businesses in Missouri, including the Kansas City area. The bank uses customer deposits as its main funding source and lends to businesses, homebuyers and other consumers. Borrowers pay interest and loan fees; the bank also earns interest on investments. Most of the business’s income comes from what remains after paying interest on deposits and other funding.
Earnings depend on funding costs, the interest earned on loans and investments, and borrowers’ ability to repay. The bank is closely tied to economic and real-estate conditions in central, west-central and southwest Missouri and the Kansas City area. Its smaller wealth-management business provides financial planning, investment planning and trust services to individuals and business owners, with much of its revenue coming from fees based on assets under management.
The parent company receives most of its funds through dividends from Hawthorn Bank. Banking laws prohibit the bank from paying dividends out of capital and surplus, or when it is undercapitalized or would become undercapitalized after the payment.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Southern Missouri Bancorp’s Southern Bank competes with Hawthorn Bank for deposits and borrowers in Missouri, including Springfield. Both use deposits to fund lending, so Southern Bank’s ability to attract deposits and collect on real-estate loans offers a read on pressures Hawthorn also faces.
NATIONAL BANK HOLDINGS CORP.’s Bank Midwest competes directly with Hawthorn Bank for business and consumer loans and deposits in greater Kansas City and Missouri. Its progress attracting those borrowers and depositors matters to Hawthorn’s share of the same local banking market.
Landmark Bancorp Inc’s Landmark National Bank competes for business and household loans and deposits on the Kansas side of Kansas City, overlapping Hawthorn Bank’s greater Kansas City market.
Bank of America Corporation competes with Hawthorn Bank through its Kansas City and Missouri retail operations for household and small-business deposits, loans and clients seeking help managing their wealth.
NATIONAL BANK HOLDINGS CORP. earningsNBHC
National Bank Holdings’ report will show how its deposits and lending are progressing in the Kansas City and Missouri markets where it competes with Hawthorn.
Read deposit growth alongside loan growth. If both are firm, this direct rival is still attracting depositors and borrowers, pointing to continued competition for Hawthorn. If both weaken, the rival’s momentum is fading, but that alone does not show customers have moved to Hawthorn. The report is a read on the shared market, not Hawthorn’s own results.
Hawthorn Bancshars Inc. earningsThis company
Hawthorn earns mainly from the gap between what it collects on loans and pays for deposits, and its report will show whether that income holds up as borrowers repay.
Read net interest income alongside credit-loss measures. Steady net interest income with no marked rise in credit losses would suggest loan income is still covering funding costs and borrower repayment has not materially worsened. Weaker net interest income would point to pressure on loan returns or deposit costs; rising credit losses would show borrower stress eating into income. Together, the figures show whether Hawthorn’s core lending business is holding up or facing both funding and repayment pressure.
Southern Missouri Bancorp earningsSMBC
Southern Missouri Bancorp’s report will show how it is gathering deposits and collecting on real-estate loans in Missouri markets, including Springfield, that overlap Hawthorn’s.
Read deposit trends alongside delinquencies or credit-loss measures on real-estate loans. Steady deposits and contained loan problems would suggest this bank is still attracting funding and its borrowers are not showing marked repayment stress. Weaker deposits or worsening loan problems would flag possible pressure on local bank funding or property borrowers that Hawthorn should watch too. This is a signal from an overlapping market, not a substitute for Hawthorn’s own loan data.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
Hawthorn Bank earns mainly from the difference between interest on loans and investments and what it pays for deposits and other funding, so Fed rate decisions can change that spread and the Bank’s earnings as each side adjusts.

If it comes in above expectations
If rates rise, yields on new or repricing loans and investments may lift Bank income, but higher costs on deposits and other funding can offset that gain; the net effect depends on which adjusts faster.
If it comes in below expectations
If rates fall, lower yields on new or repricing loans and investments may reduce Bank income, while lower deposit and other funding costs may cushion the decline; the net effect depends on which adjusts faster.
