Company overview

H World Group serves business and leisure travelers through hotel brands including HanTing, JI Hotel and Steigenberger Hotels & Resorts. China supplies most of its revenue, while Europe is another substantial market following its acquisition of Deutsche Hospitality. Hotels that H World leases or owns generate slightly more than half of revenue, mainly from room bookings; the company runs these hotels and pays their rent, staffing and other operating costs.

Most hotels in its network, however, belong to franchisees, whose fees generate nearly as much revenue as its directly operated hotels. Franchisees own or lease the properties and fund development and operations. H World supplies brands, reservations, technology and marketing support, including H Rewards. At most partner hotels it also appoints managers—a model it calls “manachising”—while ordinary franchisees manage daily operations themselves. Partners pay for these services, with ongoing fees often linked to hotel revenue.

The business depends on travel demand, especially within China, and on room rates and occupancy. Its fee business also relies on franchisees maintaining hotel standards and investing in their properties. Hotels in China need operating permits and must meet property-use, fire-safety and other requirements; some are not fully compliant, which can delay openings or force operations to stop.

  • Atour competes with H World across China for paying hotel guests and owners who fund hotels and pay the chain to manage them. Watch Atour’s hotel openings: its 779 hotels under development at the end of 2025 show the expansion H World faces in attracting those owners.

  • GreenTree competes with H World for Chinese hotel guests and franchisees; both provide brands and management support to owners who fund hotel operations and pay recurring fees. GreenTree’s franchise-management fee revenue is worth watching because it reflects both the number of rooms in its network and the room revenue those hotels earn.

  • Trip.com and H World both depend on Chinese business and leisure travel: Trip.com earns money arranging trips and accommodation bookings, while H World collects room payments from guests and hotel fees from owners. Watch Trip.com’s accommodation bookings for a read on the travel demand behind H World’s hotel revenue.

  • IHG competes with H World for guests and owners choosing a hotel brand, earning fees largely from owners who operate franchised hotels. Watch growth in IHG’s hotel network and development pipeline for signs of its ability to attract owners who could otherwise choose H World.

  • Marriott competes with H World for hotel guests and owners in Greater China and other overlapping markets, charging owners to use its brands and booking systems. Its Greater China segment results offer a geographically relevant comparison for H World, rather than relying on Marriott’s worldwide results.

  • Hilton competes with H World for guests and hotel-owner contracts across several price categories, earning fees from owners for managing hotels or letting them use its brands. Watch Hilton’s management and franchise fee revenue: those fees are tied to hotel revenue and, for some management contracts, operating profit.
