HomeTrust Bancshares, Inc. conducts its main business through HomeTrust Bank, which takes deposits from individuals, businesses and nonprofits and uses those funds, alongside borrowings, to lend to businesses and households. Commercial real estate is its largest lending category. The bank also invests in debt securities. Its main income comes from the interest borrowers and investments pay, after subtracting interest paid on deposits and borrowings.
The bank earns additional income from account and loan fees and from originating loans for sale to other investors. Mortgage lending and Small Business Administration (SBA) lending supply a significant part of its noninterest income; these operations depend on producing loans that investors will buy profitably.
Its lending is concentrated in North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia. Borrowers’ ability to repay and the income and value of properties securing its loans matter particularly to this real-estate-heavy business. Earnings also depend on keeping funding costs below lending and investment yields. The parent company relies almost entirely on dividends from HomeTrust Bank for revenue, and the bank’s ability to pay those dividends is subject to earnings and regulatory requirements.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
SmartFinancial, Inc., through SmartBank, competes with HomeTrust for banking customers in Tennessee and Georgia and finances equipment for the same southeastern small and medium-sized business market. Watch its Fountain Equipment Finance business, which lends to businesses buying heavy equipment, semi-trucks and trailers and also leases those assets—the overlap is with HomeTrust’s equipment financing.
Bankunited, Inc. competes with HomeTrust for small and middle-market business borrowers in Atlanta and Charlotte; both also finance equipment and municipalities. Its lending to those business customers in the two cities is the part to watch for competition with HomeTrust’s expansion into larger markets.
United Bankshares Inc, through United Bank, competes with HomeTrust for business borrowers and household deposits across Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. The overlap puts both the customers who borrow from HomeTrust and the household savings that fund its loans in contention.
First Financial Corporation competes with HomeTrust in Tennessee and northern Georgia by lending to businesses, homebuyers and consumers and providing lease financing. Its lending and leasing activity in those markets is the relevant comparison for HomeTrust, rather than its broader banking business elsewhere.
Community Trust Bancorp Inc competes with HomeTrust for deposits and business and household borrowers in northeastern Tennessee communities. Watch its deposit pricing and customer-service offering there: both banks seek local savings and lending relationships, and Community Trust emphasizes competitively priced products and personal service.
Great Southern Bancorp Inc competes with HomeTrust for commercial property and business loans through offices in Atlanta and Charlotte, but gathers its core deposits in the Midwest. Watch lending from those two offices for the direct overlap with HomeTrust; its deposit business serves a different geographic base.
HomeTrust Bancshares, Inc. earningsThis company
HomeTrust Bancshares earns mainly from interest on loans and investments minus interest paid on deposits and borrowings, and this report will show whether rising funding costs are squeezing that income.
Read the net interest margin alongside funding costs, and check whether yields on loans and investments are keeping pace. A steady or wider margin says asset income is keeping up with deposit and borrowing costs; a narrower margin says funding costs are rising faster and puts HomeTrust’s main source of profit under pressure.
United Bankshares Inc earningsUBSI
United Bankshares’ report will show how it is competing for business borrowers and household deposits in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina, where HomeTrust also lends and gathers funds for its loans.
Read United Bank’s loan growth alongside deposit growth. If both strengthen, borrowing demand and competition for deposits are active in these shared states, which could make it harder for HomeTrust to win borrowers and retain funding for its loans. If both weaken, market activity looks softer, but that does not establish HomeTrust’s own loan or deposit results.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
HomeTrust earns most of its pre-tax income from the spread between interest on its loans and investments and what it pays on deposits and borrowings, so Fed rate decisions can change that income and mortgage-loan sales.

If it comes in above expectations
If rates rise more than expected, HomeTrust may pay more for deposits and borrowings before loan and investment yields catch up, squeezing its interest income; higher rates may also reduce mortgage refinancing and loan sales.
If it comes in below expectations
If rates fall more than expected, HomeTrust may pay less for deposits and borrowings, but lower yields on loans and investments may offset that relief; lower rates may also support mortgage refinancing and loan sales.
