Company

Company overview

Healthcare organizations use HealthStream’s applications to train staff, verify clinicians’ qualifications and manage staffing schedules. Its hStream platform connects these applications, while CredentialStream helps manage providers from recruitment through credential checks, authorization to provide care and enrollment with insurers. Customers can also subscribe to courses supplied by healthcare associations, publishers and other partners.

Subscriptions and software licenses generate nearly all revenue, with fees depending on the subscriptions and solutions purchased. Implementation, training and consulting provide a smaller revenue stream. Healthcare providers supply a substantial portion of revenue, and a relatively small group of customers accounts for a substantial share of the total.

The business depends on customers renewing contracts, healthcare organizations’ technology budgets and partners continuing to supply content and technology. Training and continuing-education requirements support part of demand, and some offerings depend on maintaining accreditation. HealthStream must also protect sensitive health and workforce data under HIPAA and other privacy laws, which constrain how it can use and store that information.

HealthStream's results hinge on healthcare workforce software spending and competition from specialists Relias Learning, Symplr and RLDatix, none of which appears in this list.

  • AMN Healthcare Services competes with HealthStream for healthcare employers' workforce software spending, while its staffing services depend on the same clinical workforce needs. Watch its technology and workforce solutions business for signals about demand for tools to manage healthcare staff.

  • Workday competes with HealthStream by selling healthcare employers software to manage their people, overlapping with HealthStream's workforce learning and management applications. Its healthcare customer business is more relevant to this rivalry than its sales across other industries.

  • Health Catalyst and HealthStream both depend on hospitals' software budgets: hospitals pay Health Catalyst to combine and analyze data, and HealthStream to develop and manage staff. Demand for Health Catalyst's Ignite platform offers a view of spending on software aimed at improving hospital operations, rather than direct workforce-software competition.

  • Spok Holdings identifies HealthStream as a competitor for parts of the software it sells to help healthcare teams communicate and collaborate, not for its entire business. Watch software licenses and support rather than wireless messaging revenue when assessing that overlap with HealthStream's workforce applications.

  • SAP competes with HealthStream by selling healthcare organizations software for employee learning and talent management. That healthcare workforce offering is the relevant overlap, rather than SAP's broader cloud subscriptions, software licenses and services.

  • Oracle competes with HealthStream for healthcare organizations' spending on software that trains and manages employees. For this rivalry, focus on those workforce applications rather than Oracle's broader cloud and software, hardware and services businesses.
