Company

Company overview

AMN Healthcare Services helps U.S. hospitals and other healthcare organizations fill staffing gaps and recruit permanent employees. Nurse and allied health staffing brings in most of its revenue; physician and healthcare leadership staffing is the next-largest business. Clients pay AMN directly for its services, rather than through Medicare, Medicaid or insurers.

A substantial share of the business comes through contracts under which AMN manages clients’ temporary staffing needs, filling assignments with its own professionals and workers from other agencies. Clients that manage staffing themselves can instead use ShiftWise Flex, Medefis or b4health to organize and track agency workers; AMN typically charges a fee based on staffing spending through these systems. Its smaller technology and workforce business also includes AMN Language Services, which provides healthcare interpretation by video, telephone and in person.

The business depends on healthcare organizations needing outside staff and AMN recruiting enough qualified, licensed professionals to fill those needs. Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and its affiliates are a major customer, supplying a substantial share of revenue through clinical managed services. State staffing-price limits can restrict AMN’s ability to pass higher clinician pay on to clients. Its temporary physician business generally uses independent contractors; where states prohibit companies not owned by physicians from employing physicians, a requirement to classify those contractors as employees could prevent AMN from using its current model.

AMN’s results hinge on hospitals’ demand for temporary clinicians—especially Kaiser Foundation Hospitals and affiliates, at 22% of revenue—and competition from major staffing rivals Aya Healthcare and CHG Healthcare Services.

  • RCM Technologies competes with AMN for U.S. healthcare institutions’ and schools’ spending on nurses, allied health professionals and temporary clinicians. Watch RCM’s Specialty Health Care staffing revenue rather than its engineering businesses for a read on the customer demand AMN also serves.

  • HealthStream competes with AMN for healthcare organizations’ workforce technology spending and explicitly names AMN as a rival. Its subscriptions for staff learning, credential checks and scheduling offer a view of that market, while AMN’s software helps clients manage temporary clinical hiring and internal float pools.
