Company

Company overview

High Tide Inc. runs Canna Cabana, a Canadian cannabis retailer built around a discount-club model and its Cabana Club loyalty program. Customers buy cannabis products and consumption accessories from provincially authorized stores. These Canadian store operations account for nearly all revenue. The business depends on licensed producers supplying products, the gap between purchase costs and selling prices, and keeping each store’s authorization; opening or expanding stores requires regulatory approval.

Its smaller businesses sell accessories and hemp-derived products online through brands such as Grasscity and NuLeaf Naturals, and import and wholesale medical cannabis in Germany through Remexian. Remexian buys from third-party growers and sells to pharmacies and distribution partners, relying on outside processors to prepare and ship products. It pays supplier deposits well before collecting from German customers, tying up cash in inventory and orders.

The online hemp business faces limits on what it can sell. High Tide continues to sell hemp-derived Delta-9 products in permitted U.S. states, but their federal legality is uncertain, and a scheduled change to the federal hemp definition would prohibit many of these products.

  • Sundial Growers Inc.’s Value Buds and Spiritleaf stores compete with High Tide’s Canna Cabana for Canadian shoppers buying adult-use cannabis and accessories. Watch its cannabis retail sales rather than liquor sales for a read on competition facing Canna Cabana’s discount club.

  • Organigram Global Inc. makes cannabis products across price tiers, so the Canadian consumer demand behind its brands also matters to High Tide’s Canna Cabana stores. Demand for its dried flower, pre-rolls and gummies offers a view of which products and price tiers shoppers want.

  • Village Farms International, Inc. produces Canadian cannabis through Pure Sunfarms and Rose LifeScience, sharing exposure to the consumer spending and product prices that drive High Tide’s stores. Its Canadian cannabis results are the relevant comparison, rather than its produce or renewable natural gas businesses.

  • Cronos Group Inc. Common Share links to High Tide through both cannabis sales and financing: it sells brands into the Canadian wholesale system serving retailers such as Canna Cabana, and holds High Tide debt it can convert into shares plus warrants to buy shares. Watch Canadian demand for Spinach and Lord Jones, alongside any conversion of the loan or exercise of the warrants.

  • Tilray Brands, Inc. shares High Tide’s exposure to Canadian adult-use cannabis demand as a producer, and competes in Germany’s medical cannabis market with High Tide’s Remexian distribution business. Its German medical cannabis sales are the part to watch for that rivalry.

  • Canopy Growth Corporation sells adult-use cannabis in Canada and medical cannabis in Germany, overlapping both High Tide’s retail market and the customers served by Remexian. Its German medical cannabis business is a useful place to watch competition for Remexian, which imports and distributes cannabis to German pharmacies.

  • Aurora Cannabis Inc. serves German medical cannabis patients, competing with products that High Tide’s Remexian imports and distributes to German pharmacies. Watch its German medical cannabis business for competition facing Remexian, rather than its Canadian direct-to-patient sales.
