Shipbuilding and related work generate most of Huntington Ingalls Industries’ revenue. Its Newport News business builds nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines and keeps nuclear ships in service through maintenance, overhaul and refueling. It is the U.S. Navy’s exclusive prime contractor for nuclear-carrier refueling and complex overhauls. Ingalls builds and maintains non-nuclear ships, including destroyers and amphibious ships, for the Navy and Coast Guard.
The company also earns revenue through Mission Technologies, which supplies defense and intelligence customers with technology and services such as unmanned systems, training and systems that support military communications and operations. This business also relies mainly on U.S. Government contracts.
The federal government is the ultimate customer for nearly all revenue, with the Navy supplying the large majority. The company works under multi-year contracts, either directly or through other prime contractors. Some contracts reimburse allowable costs plus fees; others tie earnings more closely to agreed prices and cost targets. Work on these long-running programs depends on annual congressional funding. Government contracts also require certain materials and components to come from approved sources, while nuclear operations must meet safety and security requirements and can be shut down for safety noncompliance.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
General Dynamics is both HII's naval shipbuilding rival and a source of work: they share U.S. Navy Virginia-class submarine construction, while its Electric Boat business pays HII for Columbia-class design and modules. Watch Electric Boat's submarine programs for developments that reach HII's own construction work.
BWX Technologies and HII share exposure to U.S. spending on nuclear-powered naval ships: BWX makes nuclear components and fuel for government programs serving the fleet HII builds and refuels. Its naval nuclear business is the line to watch, though the companies also compete for government-site operations and environmental cleanup work.
HII's nuclear-submarine and aircraft-carrier work uses critical naval pumps and valves supplied by Curtiss-Wright. That makes Curtiss-Wright's role in those components relevant to the ships HII builds and services for the U.S. Navy.
Leonardo DRS, Inc. shares HII's exposure to naval fleet investment, making propulsion and power-distribution systems for defense customers while HII builds Navy ships. Watch its Integrated Mission Systems business for developments in ship propulsion and power equipment, rather than treating it as a confirmed HII supplier.
Leidos competes with HII's Mission Technologies business for government-funded defense technology, intelligence and mission-support contracts. Its awards in those areas are the relevant news for HII holders, rather than naval shipbuilding.
CACI INTERNATIONAL CLA competes for the same U.S. government customers as HII's Mission Technologies business, selling overlapping cyber, analytics, engineering and mission-support capabilities. Watch CACI's contract wins in those services for a view of the competition facing HII's technology business.
Lockheed Martin shares HII's exposure to U.S. Navy fleet procurement: it supplies naval combat systems for warships HII builds. Its naval combat-system work is the relevant connection for HII holders, with one company providing the systems and the other building the ships.
Northrop Grumman competes with HII's Mission Technologies business to supply intelligence, surveillance, electronic warfare and other defense technologies to government customers. Watch its mission-system contract awards for competition relevant to HII's technology business.
L3Harris Technologies competes with HII's Mission Technologies business for government defense communications, electronic warfare and intelligence-system work. Contract awards in those systems matter to HII holders as news about a rival for its technology business, not its shipyards.
CACI INTERNATIONAL CLA earningsCACI
CACI's report will show how much government work it is winning in cyber, analytics, engineering and mission support, areas that overlap with Huntington Ingalls' Mission Technologies business.
Read CACI's disclosed contract wins alongside growth in its cyber, analytics, engineering and mission-support work. More wins with growth in those services would show it is securing a share of the government demand HII also pursues, making the competitive pressure more tangible. Fewer wins or slower growth would offer less evidence of that pressure, but would not show that HII won the work. The takeaway is whether CACI is continuing to win in overlapping services.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
The Fed’s decision sets the benchmark interest rate across the economy, which can change what HII pays if it borrows on its variable-rate revolving credit facility.

If it comes in above expectations
If the policy rate is above the estimate, higher borrowing rates could increase HII’s interest costs if it draws on the facility; its nearly unused facility at year-end 2025 limited this direct exposure.
If it comes in below expectations
If the policy rate is below the estimate, lower borrowing rates could reduce HII’s interest costs if it draws on the facility; its nearly unused facility at year-end 2025 limited this direct exposure.
Huntington Ingalls Industries, Inc. earningsThis company
Huntington Ingalls' report will show whether its shipbuilding and Mission Technologies work is turning into more operating income after costs.
Read revenue alongside operating income for each business, especially shipbuilding and Mission Technologies. Rising revenue with rising operating income and steady or improving margins would mean added work is producing profit without costs swallowing the gain. Rising revenue with falling operating income or margins would point to labor, supplier or execution costs squeezing contract returns. The question is whether more work is also producing more profit.
General Dynamics Corporation earningsGD
General Dynamics' Electric Boat results will show how submarine work shared with Huntington Ingalls is progressing, including Virginia-class construction and Columbia-class design and modules that Electric Boat pays HII to provide.
Read Electric Boat's submarine sales alongside its operating margin. Rising sales with margins holding would point to work progressing without costs materially eroding returns, a supportive signal for HII's part in Virginia-class construction and Columbia-class design and modules. Slower sales or falling margins could point to slower progress or execution costs, putting pressure on HII's related work as well. General Dynamics' results do not establish HII's own orders or payments; the takeaway is the direction of the shared programs.
Curtiss-Wright Corp. earningsCW
Curtiss-Wright's defense results offer a read on the supplier backdrop for naval pumps and valves used in Huntington Ingalls' nuclear-powered ships.
Read Curtiss-Wright's defense sales alongside its operating margin. Rising sales with margins holding would suggest demand is supporting the supplier's defense business without significant cost pressure, a steadier backdrop for pumps and valves used in HII's nuclear-powered ships. Weaker sales or falling margins would point to softer supplier activity or cost strain, making the supply environment worth watching. These figures do not establish HII-specific deliveries, prices or shortages; the takeaway is whether the supplier backdrop looks steady or pressured.
