Hagerty serves owners who want specialized insurance for collector cars and enthusiast vehicles. Its Guaranteed Value policies cover vehicles at an agreed value rather than a depreciated value. It sells coverage directly and through agents and insurer partnerships, sets policy terms, and handles claims. Insurance supplies most of its revenue: Hagerty Re receives premiums for taking on policy risks, while carrier partners pay commissions and fees for policies Hagerty sells and services. It also earns investment income on its insurance portfolio.
The insurance business relies heavily on Markel’s Essentia, which issues much of the coverage Hagerty Re reinsures. Under the arrangement effective in 2026, Essentia still issues those policies, but Hagerty Re takes all their premiums and risks and pays Markel a fee. Earnings therefore depend on premiums covering claims and operating costs, not just on selling policies. Regulators must approve insurance products and can restrict rates and underwriting choices.
A smaller business helps collectors buy and sell vehicles through Broad Arrow live auctions and brokered private sales, as well as Hagerty Marketplace digital auctions. Buyers and sellers pay transaction fees and commissions; BAC also earns interest on loans secured by collector cars.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Hagerty’s results hinge chiefly on collector-car insurance growth and claims experience, with State Farm’s Classic+ alliance offering an important additional route to customers.
Hagerty depends on Markel Group’s Essentia to issue its principal U.S. policies; both earn income from specialty insurance bought by policyholders. From January 2026, Hagerty Re receives all premiums and bears all risk on these policies, while paying Markel an initial fee of 2% of written premium for issuing them—making their claims experience more directly consequential for Hagerty.
Allstate competes for vehicle owners who could choose Hagerty’s specialized collector-car and enthusiast insurance instead of its broad auto policies. Watch Allstate’s customizable auto coverage sold through its own agents and direct channels: it gives those owners another way to insure their cars.
Hartford competes with Hagerty for enthusiast vehicle owners by selling personal-auto insurance that can cover their cars. Both insurers face vehicle-claim costs, so that exposure matters alongside the choice between Hartford’s general auto coverage and Hagerty’s specialized policies.
Hanover competes for owners who could buy Hagerty’s enthusiast policies, selling personal-auto coverage through independent agents. Those agents give vehicle owners an alternative to Hagerty’s specialized insurance.
Hagerty, Inc. earningsThis company
Hagerty earns mainly from collector-car insurance commissions and assumed premiums, and this report will show whether premium growth is leaving underwriting income after claims and expenses.
Read total written-premium growth alongside Hagerty Re’s combined ratio, which compares claims and underwriting expenses with earned premiums; below 100% means underwriting income. Growing premiums with the ratio still below 100% would show policy growth is adding income rather than consuming it. Slower growth or a ratio rising toward or above 100% would show weaker expansion or higher claims costs squeezing that income, especially as Hagerty Re takes all the risk on Essentia policies from 2026.
Markel Group Inc. earningsMKL
Markel Group’s report will show claims experience in its specialty-insurance business, which shares claims risk with Hagerty Re on Essentia policies Hagerty now fully assumes.
Watch Markel’s specialty-insurance underwriting results and claims trends, not its overall figures as a proxy for Hagerty’s results. Manageable claims would support Hagerty Re retaining more premium under the new arrangement; worsening claims would signal that payouts on the Essentia policies Hagerty assumes could consume more of that premium.
