Company overview

Grove Collaborative Holdings, Inc. serves consumers seeking household and personal-care products selected against its ingredient, environmental and performance standards. Customers pay for products ordered through its website and app, choosing immediate shipment or scheduled automatic orders. Third-party products supply most revenue; its own brands account for a substantial minority, led by home care. Grove Co., its largest brand on the platform, includes cleaners, soaps and laundry products, with refillable, reusable and reduced-plastic options. Grove has ended brick-and-mortar distribution but retains selected online selling partners.

The business depends on attracting customers at an affordable cost and keeping them buying. Meta- and Alphabet-owned channels have historically supplied a significant number of new customers through digital advertising. Third-party technology providers now run its ecommerce platform; the migration disrupted shopping and order handling. Grove also relies on a limited number of suppliers and manufacturers for a significant portion of its products.

Automatic-renewal rules constrain its subscription offerings. A California prosecutors’ investigation has already prompted significant changes to its direct-to-consumer model. As a public benefit corporation, Grove must also balance shareholders’ financial interests with those of affected stakeholders and its stated public-benefit purposes.
