Company

Company overview

Green Dot Corporation helps businesses offer bank accounts and payment services without building their own banking platform. Partners including Apple, Intuit, Dayforce and Amazon integrate its services into their offerings, while its wholly owned Green Dot Bank issues most of the company's own and partner products. Business-to-business services supply most revenue. Partners pay program-management fees, and account users pay maintenance and transaction fees; together, card revenue and other fees form the largest revenue source. Green Dot also earns fees from merchants' banks when users make card purchases and interest from assets funded by customer deposits.

Consumers can also open GO2bank and Green Dot accounts directly or through retailers. Walmart is its largest retail distributor and offers the Walmart MoneyCard issued by Green Dot Bank. The Green Dot Network lets people add cash to accounts at participating stores. Green Dot also moves wages and processes tax refunds through Santa Barbara Tax Products Group. These services generate transaction fees; for a refund transfer, it deducts tax-preparation and processing fees from the refund before sending the balance to the customer.

A single unnamed banking-platform partner supplies most of Green Dot's total revenue. The business therefore depends heavily on that relationship and on partners promoting its services. Tax-refund processing also relies on a small group of tax-preparation firms, most without long-term commitments.

As a bank holding company, Green Dot must meet bank capital, consumer-protection and anti-money-laundering requirements. It operates under a Federal Reserve consent order and heightened oversight, and its regulatory standing can restrict new activities requiring approval. A proposed transaction would transfer Green Dot Bank to a New CommerceOne subsidiary and sell the non-bank technology business to a Smith Ventures affiliate. Closing remains subject to approvals and other conditions; meanwhile, the agreements limit actions Green Dot can take without the buyers' consent.

Green Dot Corporation’s share-price outlook also hinges on completing its proposed bank combination with New CommerceOne and selling its non-bank fintech business to a Smith Ventures affiliate.

  • Chime Financial competes with Green Dot’s GO2bank and other consumer accounts for everyday banking customers through low-cost digital accounts and cards. Chime earns mainly from fees generated when members spend on its cards, so its card-spending revenue is worth watching for pressure on Green Dot’s account usage.

  • SoFi Technologies competes with Green Dot for digital consumer banking customers and, through Galileo, for businesses buying technology to run banking and card programs.

  • Marqeta competes with Green Dot for businesses launching payment products: both sell services to run card programs and add financial services to customers’ products. Watch Marqeta’s card-issuing and transaction-processing business for competition facing Green Dot’s business banking platform.

  • Dave competes with Green Dot’s consumer banking and on-demand wage access through mobile checking and ExtraCash, which provides short-term credit through bank partners to bridge gaps between paychecks. Use of Dave Checking and ExtraCash is worth watching for competition among customers managing money between paydays.

  • Apple is one of Green Dot’s largest paying customers for banking services, integrating Green Dot’s platform into its financial-service offerings. For Green Dot, watch news about those offerings rather than Apple’s sales of phones and other hardware.

  • Green Dot depends on Walmart for more than store shelf space: it supplies and operates Walmart MoneyCard, issues the cards through Green Dot Bank and holds the deposits. Products and services offered through Walmart’s stores and other distribution channels supplied about 7% of Green Dot’s operating revenue in 2025, down from 17% in 2023.

  • Wealthfront relies on Green Dot Bank to give Cash Account clients debit cards, ATM access and mobile check deposits. Watch Wealthfront’s cash-management business, which earns fees from program banks based on client deposits, rather than its investment-advisory revenue for this banking relationship.

  • Amazon is one of Green Dot’s largest paying customers for banking services, using its platform in offerings for consumers, partners or workforces in the United States. News about that banking relationship is more directly relevant to Green Dot than Amazon’s overall retail sales.

  • Q2 Holdings competes with Green Dot through Helix for fintech businesses building banking products. Those businesses typically pay Helix largely according to usage, making Helix’s usage-based revenue a useful place to watch competition for Green Dot’s embedded banking platform.
