Company

Company overview

eBay connects third-party sellers with buyers through eBay.com, local versions of the site and mobile apps. Sellers supply the goods, and eBay provides the platform where buyers find and purchase them. Most revenue comes from marketplace services, chiefly commissions on completed, paid transactions. Sellers also pay to make their listings more visible through Promoted Listings, a meaningful additional source of revenue.

The business depends on sellers offering inventory buyers want and buyers continuing to spend. Advertising income also depends on sellers seeing those promotions generate sales. Cross-border trade is an important source of revenue and profit, so shipping costs, delivery times and trade restrictions affect activity. Google search supplies significant traffic, while outside payment providers help buyers pay and sellers receive funds.

Sanctions and export controls prohibit some transactions. Marketplace rules also require eBay to verify sellers and remove dangerous products, limiting what can be sold and imposing obligations on how it runs the platform.

Know what’s buried in EBAY’s filings before you buy

The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.

  • Etsy competes with eBay for independent sellers and shoppers; both connect buyers with sellers rather than stock the goods themselves, earning transaction fees and seller advertising revenue. Watch Etsy’s active buyers and sellers for signs of how well its emphasis on unique items attracts those customers.

  • Alibaba’s AliExpress competes with eBay to connect cross-border merchandise buyers and sellers, including Chinese merchants selling into international markets.

  • MercadoLibre and eBay both benefit from more online merchandise purchases and marketplace advertising: they connect buyers and sellers and collect transaction and advertising fees. MercadoLibre’s marketplace fees and advertising sales offer a comparison for eBay’s revenue drivers, but its Latin American markets differ from eBay’s principal geographic exposure.

  • Liquidity Services competes with eBay for buyers and sellers of discounted and secondary-market goods through marketplaces that sell surplus inventory and liquidation merchandise.
