Company overview

Cryoport helps biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies move and preserve biological materials used in research, clinical trials and commercial treatments, with particular emphasis on cell and gene therapies. Customers pay it to arrange temperature-controlled shipments, store materials and prepare them for use. Through IntegriCell, it also freezes and processes cellular starting materials for cell therapies. Cryoportal connects these services and provides records of shipment conditions and who handled the materials. Services bring in somewhat more than half of revenue, with logistics accounting for most of that business.

Equipment sales provide the other substantial revenue stream. MVE Biological Solutions manufactures cryogenic freezers and transport vessels, selling directly and through distributors to customers such as biopharmaceutical companies, laboratories, biorepositories and fertility clinics. MVE also supplies equipment for Cryoport’s own services.

The business depends on preserving materials throughout storage and delivery, including work performed by third-party carriers. Some equipment components come from sole-source suppliers. One services customer supplies a meaningful minority of total revenue. Shipping rules and required approvals govern where and how Cryoport can provide its solutions; failure to comply can prevent it from using its shipping containers or marketing its services.

Cryoport’s growth hinges on cell-and-gene-therapy trials and commercial volumes, with DHL an important strategic logistics partner after buying CRYOPDP.

  • Azenta competes with Cryoport for life-sciences customers buying cryogenic storage equipment and paying to store and manage biological samples. Azenta’s Sample Management Solutions business is the part to watch for competition with Cryoport’s storage systems, biostorage and sample-management services.

  • Repligen and Cryoport both depend on biological-drug development, manufacturing investment and production volumes: drug manufacturers buy Repligen’s production technologies, while Cryoport charges for storing and transporting biological materials and for cryogenic systems. Demand for Repligen’s filtration products offers a read on manufacturing spending, rather than a direct measure of Cryoport’s therapy shipments.

  • Cencora’s World Courier competes with Cryoport to transport life-sciences customers’ sensitive materials, but Cencora mainly earns its revenue by distributing medicines to healthcare providers. Watch its specialty biopharmaceutical logistics business for competitive developments relevant to Cryoport, rather than its broader pharmaceutical distribution results.
