Company

Company overview

Cencora buys medicines from manufacturers and sells them to pharmacies, hospitals and physician practices, usually as their primary supplier. Most revenue comes from its U.S. human-health business, which distributes branded, generic and specialty medicines, including treatments administered by doctors. It also supplies healthcare providers in Europe and sells animal-health products.

Providers pay Cencora for the products they buy and for services such as pharmacy management and patient-access support. Pharmaceutical and biotechnology manufacturers also pay for services that help bring medicines to market, meet regulatory requirements and transport specialized products. These services complement the much larger drug-distribution business.

Revenue is concentrated among a relatively small group of large customers. Walgreens and Boots together are its largest customer relationship, and Evernorth Health Services is another major customer. The business depends on retaining these relationships, securing medicines from suppliers and managing the difference between purchase and selling prices as manufacturers change drug prices. Distribution also requires licenses and product traceability; controlled-substance rules and its opioid settlement require monitoring to prevent drugs from being diverted to unauthorized uses.

Cencora’s results hinge on prescription volumes and major customer contracts: Walgreens and Boots together accounted for 25% of fiscal 2025 revenue, and Evernorth Health Services another 13%.

  • McKesson competes with Cencora for pharmacies, hospitals and physician practices buying branded, generic and specialty medicines. Its specialty-drug distribution and services for oncology and retina practices show where the two also compete beyond supplying medicines.

  • Cardinal Health competes with Cencora to supply medicines to pharmacies and healthcare providers and sell them related services. Its Pharmaceutical and Specialty Solutions business is the part to watch, covering specialty medicines, hospital pharmacy management and physician-office management.

  • Demand for Eli Lilly’s diabetes and weight-loss medicines drives drug volumes through Cencora, which buys medicines from Lilly and distributes them to pharmacies and healthcare providers. Lilly makes and sells these treatments, so demand for them is the connection to watch for Cencora’s distribution business.
