Company

Company overview

Coupang buys and stocks merchandise, then sells it to shoppers through its apps and websites. Its Korean retail business supplies most of its revenue. Coupang manages warehousing, order fulfillment and delivery through an integrated network that supports Rocket Delivery’s next-day service and Rocket Fresh groceries.

Other merchants also sell through Coupang without it owning their inventory. They pay commissions and fees for fulfillment, logistics and advertising, while shoppers pay for WOW membership benefits. Beyond Korean shopping, Coupang operates Taiwan retail, the Eats restaurant-ordering and delivery service, and Farfetch’s global luxury fashion marketplace. These businesses supply most of the revenue from its newer offerings.

The business depends on Korean consumer spending, suppliers and merchants maintaining an attractive selection, and enough warehouse and delivery capacity to fulfill orders reliably. Retaining WOW members also matters to demand. Korean privacy law requires customer consent for data use and prompt breach notification. Regulators are investigating the bundling of Eats benefits with WOW membership; an adverse ruling could require Coupang to sell those benefits separately.

Coupang’s results depend mainly on Korean retail demand and the cost of fulfilling orders, while investment losses in newer businesses, including Taiwan retail, also shape profitability.

  • Coupang depends on Amazon’s AWS to run its apps and websites and cannot readily switch providers; both companies also sell their own inventory and third-party goods to shoppers, with fast delivery and paid memberships. Watch AWS service disruptions for risks to Coupang’s customer access, and Amazon’s retail delivery efficiency as a comparison for Coupang’s fulfillment economics.

  • LuxExperience B.V.’s NET-A-PORTER and MR PORTER compete with Coupang’s Farfetch for global shoppers buying luxury fashion online. Sales through those two stores offer a comparison for Farfetch’s luxury-shopping demand, rather than Coupang’s core Korean retail business.
