Company

Company overview

Cinemark runs theaters in the United States and Latin America, with the U.S. business providing most of its revenue. It licenses films from distributors, schedules screenings and collects ticket payments from audiences. Ticket sales are its largest revenue source, but Cinemark pays distributors film rental fees tied to box-office receipts. Snacks, drinks and other concession purchases are its second-largest revenue source.

Access to appealing films is central to the business. A small group of major distributors supplies films that generate most of Cinemark’s U.S. box office, and licenses are negotiated film by film and theater by theater rather than secured through long-term supply agreements. Attendance also depends on the timing and quantity of releases and how long films remain exclusive to theaters before viewers can watch them at home.

Cinemark’s results hinge on films that draw audiences to theaters, but this list leaves out important rivals Regal in the U.S. and Cinépolis in Latin America.

  • AMC competes with Cinemark for moviegoers, film licenses and theater sites; both rely mainly on audiences buying tickets, food and drinks. AMC’s U.S. admissions and food-and-beverage sales offer a comparison for the moviegoing demand behind Cinemark’s earnings.

  • Marcus competes with Cinemark for U.S. moviegoers, so both theater businesses depend on films that persuade audiences to buy tickets. Watch Marcus’s theater attendance rather than its overall earnings, which also include hotels and resorts serving a separate group of guests.

  • IMAX supplies cinema systems and specially formatted films for Cinemark’s IMAX auditoriums, so stronger attendance at premium screenings benefits both companies. IMAX earns from studios’ film-formatting services and exhibitors’ system purchases or leases; its premium-format box office is a useful signal of demand for higher-priced cinema tickets.

  • National CineMedia pays Cinemark to reach its U.S. theater audiences and sells advertisers space in the Noovie pre-show and theater lobbies, making attendance important to both. Cinemark receives monthly access payments that include screen rent calculated per patron and a share of revenue depending on ad placement, so Noovie advertising demand matters beyond ticket sales.

  • Reading International competes with Cinemark in U.S. cinemas, with both earning mainly from moviegoers’ tickets, food and drinks, though Reading also has overseas cinemas and real estate. Reading says larger chains such as Cinemark may get priority from distributors for high-demand films, making its access to those films worth watching.
