Company

Company overview

C&F Financial owns C&F Bank, which serves individuals and businesses across Virginia. Local customers’ deposits provide most of the group’s funding for lending and investment securities. Interest income, after deposit and borrowing costs, is its main source of revenue; account, debit-card and wealth-management fees add income. The business depends on retaining deposits, borrowers repaying loans and the gap between lending yields and funding costs.

C&F Finance buys vehicle loan contracts from dealerships and collects interest from borrowers. It serves both more creditworthy customers and people with previous credit difficulties or limited access to traditional financing, generally charging higher rates for the latter.

C&F Mortgage makes residential mortgages in Virginia and nearby states, then sells most to investors, earning loan-sale gains and origination fees. Its Lender Solutions division also handles loan-origination work for other mortgage lenders. This business depends on mortgage demand and investors’ ability to buy loans, which in turn relies heavily on the purchase or guarantee roles of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, the FHA and the VA, rather than on a single customer.

The holding company itself receives substantially all of its revenue as dividends from C&F Bank. Banking rules limit those payments based on available profits and the bank’s capital needs.

  • FIRST NATL CORP STRASBURG VA, through First Bank, competes with C&F for business and household loans and deposits in Virginia, including overlapping Richmond-area markets.

  • HomeTrust Bancshares, Inc., through HomeTrust Bank, competes with C&F for Virginia business deposits and commercial property loans; both also make residential loans to sell to investors. Watch HomeTrust’s commercial property lending and business deposit growth for signs of competition in C&F’s markets.

  • Shore Bancshares Inc, through Shore United, competes with C&F for Virginia household and business deposits and loans. Both make home loans to sell to investors, so Shore’s mortgage sales offer a comparison for C&F’s loan-sale business, although Shore generally keeps the rights to service the loans it sells.

  • FVCBankcorp, Inc., through FVCbank, shares C&F’s exposure to Virginia business borrowing, property credit quality and competition for deposits, but concentrates farther north in the Washington metropolitan area. Its commercial property and construction loans are worth watching alongside C&F’s property lending, rather than treating its results as a readout of the same local market.
