Company overview

Baozun helps brands such as Philips, Nike and Microsoft sell online in China. It runs their stores, attracts shoppers through digital marketing, supports customers and handles warehousing and order fulfillment. Brand partners pay fixed fees or fees tied to sales value, orders fulfilled or other agreed measures; these services generate most of Baozun’s revenue. For some brands, Baozun instead buys merchandise and resells it to consumers through stores it operates, taking ownership of the stock and bearing the risk of unsold goods.

A smaller business, Brand Management, goes beyond operating online stores to develop and sell branded apparel and accessories through retail and wholesale channels. Baozun has exclusive rights to manufacture, market, distribute and sell Gap products in Greater China, and licenses for Hunter in Greater China and selected Southeast Asian markets. This business earns mainly from product sales.

Baozun depends on brands’ sales and their willingness to keep outsourcing operations. Several established partners contribute a significant share of revenue, while most merchandise transaction value flows through Tmall, making continued platform access important. Some partner contracts prevent Baozun from serving competing brands. Its Chinese operations must also stay within the activities permitted by their licenses, and expansion may require additional approvals or broader license scopes.

Beyond this list, watch Baozun’s major brand relationships such as Nike and its progress improving Gap Greater China’s retail performance under its exclusive licensing arrangement with Gap Inc.

  • Baozun and Alibaba share exposure to brands’ Tmall sales and overlap in charging brands for marketing and commerce software. Alibaba’s marketing and software revenue from marketplace merchants is worth watching alongside Baozun’s digital-marketing and IT service revenue.

  • JD.com competes with Baozun by buying goods and reselling them to consumers, but also hosts stores Baozun operates. JD’s online retail sales of electronics, appliances and general merchandise offer a comparison for demand in categories served by Baozun’s brand stores.

  • Pattern Group closely matches Baozun’s distribution offering: both buy products from brand partners and sell them to consumers through marketplace stores, while managing advertising, inventory and customer service. Pattern’s marketplace product sales provide a comparison for Baozun’s product-sales business, rather than its brand-paid service fees.

  • Vipshop competes for the Chinese consumers buying branded apparel and other goods from Baozun-operated brand stores, selling branded merchandise online at deep discounts. Its online retail sales offer a view of demand for discounted brands, not demand for Baozun’s services paid for by brand partners.

  • PDD’s Pinduoduo and Baozun both depend on Chinese online purchases: Pinduoduo charges merchants when sales are completed, while Baozun earns product revenue and sales-linked service fees from brands across marketplaces. Watch Pinduoduo’s merchant transaction fees for a read on purchasing activity on a marketplace where Baozun is expanding its relationships.
