Popular is a bank holding company whose main subsidiary, Banco Popular de Puerto Rico, serves individuals and businesses in Puerto Rico. Customers borrow to buy homes, finance vehicles and equipment, or fund business needs, and pay interest on those loans. The banks use deposits as their main funding source; earnings depend on the interest earned relative to funding costs. Popular Bank provides retail and commercial banking on the U.S. mainland through branches in New York, New Jersey and Florida.
Puerto Rico supplies most of Popular’s revenue, so the business depends heavily on the island’s economy and borrowers’ ability to repay. Real estate-related lending makes up much of its loan portfolio. The Puerto Rico government, its agencies and municipalities also supply a substantial share of deposits, making those relationships and deposit costs important to funding the business.
Banco Popular de Puerto Rico relies on Evertec for essential transaction processing, technology and security services. Banking laws restrict the businesses Popular may conduct and impose capital requirements. The parent company relies primarily on subsidiary dividends for its cash needs, but those payments face legal limits; Popular Bank currently needs regulatory approval before paying dividends.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
First BanCorp. competes with Popular for Puerto Rico households’ and businesses’ banking needs; both also operate in the Virgin Islands and mainland United States. Watch First BanCorp.’s mortgage lending and deposit rates for signs of property-market conditions and the pricing pressure that can squeeze Popular’s lending profits.
OFG BANCORP’s Oriental Bank competes with Popular for deposits and business, consumer, auto and mortgage borrowers in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Its loan rates and fees show how aggressively it is courting borrowers, a pressure that can force Popular to lower loan rates and reduce profitability.
Popular depends on EVERTEC, INC. to process transactions and provide essential technology and security services for its principal bank; replacing those services takes substantial time and money. Watch Evertec’s service outages and cybersecurity incidents, which can disrupt Popular’s banking services or expose customer information.
OFG BANCORP earningsOFG
OFG Bancorp’s report will show whether its loan terms for borrowers in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are putting pressure on Popular’s lending prices.
Read OFG’s loan yields and fee income alongside loan growth to see whether it is courting borrowers with lower rates or fees. If lending grows while yields or fees weaken, Popular may face pressure to cut its own loan prices and earn less per loan; if they hold steady, this rival is exerting less pricing pressure.
Popular Inc earningsThis company
Popular earns most of its revenue from loan interest, and this report will show whether lending income is still outpacing the cost of funding those loans with deposits.
Read net interest income and net interest margin alongside deposit costs, then check delinquencies and credit-loss provisions. Income growth with contained deposit costs and steady credit quality would show loan returns are still covering funding costs; a squeezed margin or rising delinquencies and provisions would show deposit competition or borrower stress is eroding that income.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
For Popular, Fed rate decisions affect the cost of deposits—especially Puerto Rico government funds that reset after a lag—and the interest it earns on loans and securities.

If it comes in above expectations
If rates rise more than expected, Popular may have to raise rates on deposits as they reset, increasing funding costs; repricing loans and investments may partly offset that pressure, while higher rates can also reduce the value of its securities.
If it comes in below expectations
If rates fall more than expected, Popular may pay less on deposits as they reset, easing funding costs; however, lower rates may also reduce the interest earned as loans and investments reprice.
EVERTEC, INC. earningsEVTC
Evertec’s report will show whether the transaction-processing, technology and security services it provides Popular’s main bank face operational problems that could disrupt banking services.
Watch for service outages and cybersecurity incidents, along with Evertec’s discussion of system reliability and risk. Stable service without significant incidents would mean a critical provider is supporting Popular’s transaction processing; outages or security incidents could disrupt Popular customers’ banking services, while replacing those services would take time and resources.
