Company

Company overview

Bio-Rad Laboratories gets most of its sales from clinical laboratories, including hospital and reference laboratories, that test patient blood, tissue and urine samples. It supplies instruments, reagents and software as integrated testing systems, along with materials that check test quality. Once a laboratory adopts a platform, processing more samples generally means buying more of its compatible test kits and consumables, giving Bio-Rad recurring revenue.

Life Science is the other substantial business. Universities, research laboratories and biopharmaceutical companies buy its equipment and materials to separate, purify and measure cells, proteins and nucleic acids. These products support research as well as biopharmaceutical production and quality control.

Demand depends on laboratory budgets: research customers rely particularly on government grants and research contracts, while reimbursement for clinical tests affects whether laboratories perform them. Bio-Rad’s clinical diagnostic products also require FDA clearance or approval in the United States, which limits when it can market or modify them.

Bio-Rad depends on research budgets and recurring clinical testing demand, with Roche a key diagnostics rival missing from this list.

  • Danaher competes with Bio-Rad for research and clinical laboratories buying life-science tools and diagnostic systems. Its Life Sciences and Diagnostics results offer a read on the research spending and clinical testing demand that also matter to Bio-Rad.

  • Thermo Fisher competes with Bio-Rad for laboratory spending on research instruments, reagents and clinical diagnostic products. Watch its sales to academic and government researchers for clues to the funding environment facing Bio-Rad's Life Science business.

  • QuidelOrtho competes with Bio-Rad to supply clinical laboratories and transfusion testing customers with systems that drive repeat reagent purchases. Watch its laboratory and transfusion reagent sales: customers buy these supplies to keep running tests on installed instruments, much as they do with Bio-Rad.

  • QIAGEN competes with Bio-Rad for laboratories buying instruments and consumables to prepare biological samples and analyze molecular information. Its consumables sales are the clearest line to watch for demand in those research and molecular-testing workflows.

  • Revvity and Bio-Rad compete for laboratory budgets with research instruments, reagents and diagnostic assay platforms. Revvity's sales to academic researchers and drug developers offer a window into demand for the research tools Bio-Rad also sells.

  • Bio-Techne competes with Bio-Rad for research and biopharmaceutical customers buying biological reagents and analytical instruments, including protein-analysis products. Watch its Protein Sciences business for a focused view of spending on protein research tools.

  • Waters' acquired BD diagnostics and biosciences operations compete with Bio-Rad for research and clinical laboratory customers, alongside Waters' established analytical instruments business. Watch those acquired operations for the closer read on Bio-Rad's laboratory competition, rather than Waters' instrument service revenue.

  • Abbott competes with Bio-Rad to supply clinical laboratories with diagnostic products, but its broader healthcare portfolio makes its overall results a less direct guide. Watch its diagnostics business rather than total healthcare sales for clues to Bio-Rad's clinical testing market.

  • BD competes with Bio-Rad in laboratory equipment and diagnostic products sold to life-science researchers and clinical laboratories, although its planned Life Sciences separation changes that overlap. Watch the separation of its Biosciences and Diagnostic Solutions businesses and their combination with Waters to see where that competition moves.

  • Agilent and Bio-Rad compete for life-science laboratory spending on tools for cell, genomics and biomolecular analysis. Watch Agilent's sales of these tools; its CrossLab consumables can serve customers using other suppliers' instruments, so they are less tied to Agilent instrument purchases.

  • Bruker and Bio-Rad both depend on research and biopharmaceutical laboratories investing in tools to analyze biological samples. Bruker's instrument demand from those customers offers a read on the laboratory investment cycle affecting Bio-Rad's Life Science sales.

  • Avantor competes with Bio-Rad for research and biopharmaceutical spending on laboratory reagents, sample-preparation products and consumables used to separate materials, including chromatography resins and columns. Watch those consumable sales across its Laboratory Solutions and Bioscience Production businesses for clues to spending by Bio-Rad's research and production customers.

  • Illumina's DNA-reading platforms and Bio-Rad's nucleic-acid analysis tools serve overlapping research and molecular-testing laboratories, linking both to those customers' budgets. Watch Illumina's sequencing instruments and consumables sales for a view of spending in genomics laboratories, rather than treating it as a direct match for Bio-Rad's diagnostics business.
