Company

Company overview

Better Home & Finance Holding Company helps U.S. borrowers buy homes, refinance mortgages and borrow against home equity. It reaches borrowers through its website, partner businesses and local loan officers. Better uses short-term lender credit to fund most loans, then sells them, generally together with the rights to service them. Loan purchasers pay Better, and gains on these sales provide most of its revenue. Sale proceeds repay the funding lenders and support new lending.

Its Tinman software handles applications, underwriting and processing through closing, combining automation with human review. Partners can pay fees tied to funded loans processed through Tinman, or bring customers whose loans Better originates itself. Better Plus also earns fees from third-party providers for homeownership referrals and related services. A smaller banking business, Birmingham Bank in the U.K., uses customer deposits to fund mortgages it keeps and earns interest on.

The main lending business depends on borrower demand, the margin earned on each loan sale and continued access to short-term funding. Interest rates affect both home affordability and the appeal of refinancing. Better relies on a small group of funding lenders and loan purchasers; Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac buy a significant share of its loans.

State licenses and government-agency underwriting requirements constrain where and how Better can lend and which loans it can sell. It is still seeking New York regulatory approval for its business combination; the regulator could restrict its New York lending or servicing activities.

Better’s results hinge on mortgage demand and loan-sale margins; Rocket Mortgage is an important digital lending rival missing from this list.

  • Figure Technology Solutions and Better both depend on homeowners borrowing against their homes and investors buying those loans, using automated platforms to arrange lending and sales. Watch Figure’s home-equity lending volume and gains on loan sales: home-equity lines of credit accounted for more than 98% of its originations in 2025.

  • Zillow Group competes with Better for mortgage borrowers, while its housing platform also depends on the homebuying activity that generates Better’s purchase loans. Zillow sells advertising and technology tools to real estate professionals as well as offering mortgage financing; watch its mortgage business for another view of homebuyer borrowing demand.

  • LendingTree depends on the mortgage and home-equity borrowing demand that feeds Better, but earns money connecting borrowers with lenders rather than originating and selling loans. Consumers use it free; watch its Home segment for clues to those borrowing needs and lenders’ spending to attract customers.

  • First American Financial and Better both depend on completed home purchases and refinancings: First American earns fees for title insurance and handling closings, while Better sells the loans that finance them. Watch First American’s title and settlement revenue for evidence of transactions reaching completion, rather than just borrowers expressing interest.

  • reAlpha Tech Corp. competes with Better for homebuyers arranging mortgages online, but matches buyers with mortgages as a broker rather than originating and selling loans itself. Its platform combines home search, mortgage brokering and closing services; watch its expansion, since all three services were available together only in Florida and Virginia at the time of the filing.
