Avalo Therapeutics concentrates most of its development effort and resources on abdakibart (AVTX-009). This antibody targets IL-1β, a protein involved in inflammation, and is being tested for hidradenitis suppurativa in the Phase 2 LOTUS trial. The company is not currently pursuing clinical development of its older programs.
Avalo has no approved medicines or current product sales. It has funded operations mainly by selling shares, licensing rights to other companies and selling assets. Completing abdakibart’s development requires additional financing or collaboration funding. It cannot market the drug before regulatory approval; any future sales would also depend on physicians and patients accepting it and insurers or government payors covering treatment.
Avalo holds exclusive worldwide rights to abdakibart through agreements with Eli Lilly and Leap Therapeutics. Those agreements carry milestone-payment obligations, and commercial sales would require royalties to Lilly and sales-based payments to both companies. Avalo has no manufacturing facilities and relies on a single outside manufacturer for abdakibart’s clinical supply.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Avalo Therapeutics, Inc.’s prospects hinge on abdakibart’s hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) trial results and how it differs from competing treatments, including those of UCB, which is absent from this list.
MoonLake Immunotherapeutics’ HS trial results give Avalo a direct benchmark for abdakibart: both companies are developing treatments for the same patients rather than selling those drugs today. MoonLake’s sole drug candidate, SLK, targets inflammatory skin and joint diseases, making its HS results the news to watch.
AbbVie is developing treatments for the same HS patients Avalo hopes to reach with abdakibart, putting its drug pipeline in direct competition with Avalo’s. The medicine developer and seller has Phase 3 JAK and dual IL-1α/β inhibitor programs for HS; their trial results will help show what abdakibart must compete against.
Novartis overlaps with Avalo both in the HS patients it targets and in blocking IL-1β, the mechanism behind abdakibart. The prescription-medicine developer and seller has an approved anti-IL-1β antibody and Phase 3 BTK inhibitor programs for HS; watch the HS trial results without treating the approved antibody as an approved HS treatment.
Incyte’s Phase 3 JAK inhibitor programs compete for the HS patients Avalo aims to treat with abdakibart. Incyte already sells medicines in hematology, oncology, and inflammation and autoimmunity, but its HS trial results—not those existing product sales—are the direct comparison for Avalo’s candidate.
Avalo depends on Eli Lilly’s license for the rights underlying abdakibart and must pay Lilly as development and sales milestones are reached. Avalo is responsible for developing and commercializing the drug, while Lilly is entitled to up to $70 million in development and regulatory milestones, up to $650 million in sales milestones, and royalties of 5%–15% of annual net sales by Avalo or its sublicensees.

MoonLake Immunotherapeutics’ report may show how its hidradenitis suppurativa program is progressing against the same patients Avalo hopes to treat with abdakibart.
Look for updates on MoonLake’s SLK trials in hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), a chronic inflammatory skin disease. Substantial progress would show that another treatment for the same patients is moving forward, raising the bar for Avalo’s abdakibart; limited progress would ease that immediate competitive pressure, but would not establish that abdakibart works.

Avalo Therapeutics’ report will show whether progress in the LOTUS trial is keeping pace with the cash it spends on development.
Read updates on the LOTUS trial alongside cash used in operations. Clear trial progress with cash use under control would suggest Avalo can keep advancing its lead program; higher spending without corresponding progress would point to greater funding pressure and a possible need for financing or a partner sooner.
