Company

Company overview

Ategrity Specialty Insurance Company Holdings provides commercial insurance through its insurance subsidiaries, exclusively in the excess and surplus lines (E&S) market. Businesses pay premiums for protection against covered liability claims and property losses. Casualty coverage accounts for most of its premium business, with property insurance making up the rest. It sells only through licensed surplus lines brokers and wholesale agents; three distribution partners bring in a large share of its premiums.

The company uses data to group risks and set prices, while its AtegrityOne system supports underwriting and policy administration. Smaller, standardized risks move through automated screening and quoting; underwriters evaluate medium-sized commercial risks. It earns an underwriting profit when retained premiums cover claims and operating costs. It also invests premium cash before claims are paid, earning interest and dividends, and pays reinsurers part of its premiums to share covered losses.

The business depends on pricing policies adequately, maintaining broker relationships and securing reinsurance. Required insurance capital limits how much business its subsidiaries can write, and insurance laws restrict the cash they can send to the holding company.

Know what’s buried in ASIC’s filings before you buy

The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.

  • Kinsale Capital Group, Inc. competes with Ategrity for small and medium-sized U.S. businesses buying coverage for unusual or hard-to-place risks; both lean heavily on casualty insurance and technology-driven underwriting. Watch Kinsale’s Small Business Casualty premiums and automation-led expenses as comparisons for Ategrity’s growth and efficiency.

  • RLI Corp. competes with Ategrity to insure businesses with distinctive property and casualty risks, including through Mt. Hawley’s excess and surplus (E&S) coverage. Mt. Hawley’s pricing and loss experience are the relevant comparison, rather than RLI’s broader insurance operations.

  • W.R. Berkley Corporation’s specialized businesses compete with Ategrity to sell commercial coverage in E&S markets, and Ategrity names it as a primary rival. Watch pricing in those businesses: Berkley gives them room to respond to local conditions and specialized customer needs.

  • James River Group Holdings, Inc. competes with Ategrity for small and medium-sized businesses buying specialty casualty coverage, including manufacturers and contractors. Watch premiums in those customer groups alongside pricing: James River says it will reduce business when prices and contract terms do not support underwriting profitability.

  • Skyward Specialty Insurance Group, Inc. and Ategrity both sell commercial insurance to businesses whose risks standard coverage does not adequately meet. Skyward’s E&S policies generated 59% of gross written premiums in 2025, making that business the closer comparison for Ategrity than its admitted coverage.

  • Global Indemnity Group, LLC competes with Ategrity for small businesses buying E&S property and liability coverage: Katalyx’s agencies distribute the policies, while Belmont carries on insurance operations. Watch Belmont Core’s ongoing E&S business rather than Belmont Non-Core’s de-emphasized or discontinued lines.

  • Markel Group Inc. competes with Ategrity to sell specialty E&S coverage, but its noninsurance businesses and equity investments make group results a less direct comparison. Markel Insurance’s underwriting profit is the clearer signal of insurance competition than gains or losses on its shares.

  • Bowhead Specialty Holdings Inc. and Ategrity both sell casualty-heavy commercial E&S insurance, but Bowhead puts more emphasis on professional and healthcare liability. Its Casualty division’s premiums are the closer growth comparison for Ategrity than those more specialized liability lines.

  • Hamilton Insurance Group, Ltd. competes directly with Ategrity through Hamilton Select, which sells U.S. E&S casualty coverage to small and mid-sized clients with hard-to-place risks. Watch Hamilton Select rather than group-wide premiums, which also include substantial global business insuring other insurers.

  • American Financial Group, Inc.’s Great American businesses compete with Ategrity to insure specialized commercial property and casualty risks. Their pricing and coverage decisions matter for that competition: individual businesses control underwriting and tailor products and distribution to niche business customers.
