American Public Education operates American Public University System (APUS), Rasmussen University and Hondros College of Nursing. APUS, its largest individual business by revenue, teaches adult learners entirely online and draws heavily from active-duty military members and veterans. Rasmussen and Hondros form another substantial part of the business, teaching nursing students mainly at physical campuses; Rasmussen also offers online programs outside nursing.
Tuition and related instructional fees provide most revenue. At APUS, military tuition assistance and veterans’ education benefits finance most student revenue. Rasmussen and Hondros rely mainly on federal student aid under Title IV, which includes loans and grants. Students also use personal funds and other financing. Revenue depends on attracting and retaining students, how many courses they take and which programs and payment sources they use.
Accreditation and government approvals are essential to keeping access to this funding and operating the schools. Federal rules require the institutions to obtain part of their revenue from non-federal sources, and APUS has little room below the federal-funding ceiling. Rasmussen also faces federal limits on aid-supported enrollment and Kansas nursing-board enrollment constraints. Nursing programs must meet state licensing-exam standards to retain approval.
The risk section is the longest, dullest part of the filing. This keeps only what can really hurt you: where it hits, how hard, when it plays out.
Every company claims an edge. Each one is checked against hard numbers like margins and returns: which hold, and which line gives way first.
Covista Inc. competes for APEI's nursing students through Chamberlain and for online degree students through Walden. Watch Chamberlain's nursing enrollment for a read on demand for the training RU and HCN also provide.
Perdoceo Education Corporation competes with APEI's APUS for students seeking online career degrees through CTU and AIUS, while its healthcare programs overlap with APEI's nursing offerings. CTU and AIUS enrollment is the part to watch for demand from adults seeking career-focused degrees.
Phoenix Education Partners, Inc.'s University of Phoenix competes with APEI's APUS and RU online programs for working adults seeking degrees. Watch its degree-program revenue—the source of approximately 97% of its net revenue in fiscal 2025—for demand from that shared student group.
Strategic Education, Inc.'s Capella and Strayer universities compete with APEI's APUS and RU for adults seeking online undergraduate and graduate degrees. Their bachelor's and master's enrollment offers a view of demand for the degree programs both companies sell to adult learners.
Universal Technical Institute, Inc.'s Concorde healthcare colleges compete with APEI's RU and HCN for students seeking clinical career training. Watch Concorde's enrollment rather than UTI's technician-training business to gauge demand for campus-based healthcare education.
Grand Canyon Education, Inc. serves the same demand for online degrees and healthcare education as APEI, but university partners pay it for operational support rather than students paying it tuition. Enrollment at its largest partner, Grand Canyon University, is the clearest part of its results to watch for that shared demand.
Legacy Education Inc. and APEI both collect tuition for nursing and healthcare career training, though their campuses serve different local markets. Watch enrollment in Legacy's nursing and healthcare programs as a demand signal, not a direct measure of competition at RU and HCN's campuses.
Fed Interest Rate Decision
The Fed’s decision on its benchmark interest rate matters to APEI because its variable-rate debt can cost more or less to service as borrowing rates rise or fall.

If it comes in above expectations
If the policy rate is higher than expected, APEI may pay more interest on debt that reprices, leaving less cash for operations and planned investments.
If it comes in below expectations
If the policy rate is lower than expected, interest on debt that reprices may fall, leaving APEI more cash for operations and planned investments.
Covista Inc. earningsCVSA
Covista's report will show enrollment at Chamberlain, a read on demand for the nursing education American Public Education offers through RU and HCN.
Focus on enrollment in Chamberlain's nursing programs, not Covista's other businesses. Rising enrollment would show continued demand for nursing education and support the demand backdrop for RU and HCN. Falling enrollment would point to weaker demand for these courses, but Chamberlain serves different markets, so it would not prove the same change at RU or HCN campuses.
American Public Education, Inc. earningsThis company
American Public Education earns tuition and course fees from students, and this report will show whether enrollment and tuition growth can offset rising grants and scholarships and delays in student-aid payments.
Read net tuition revenue, course registrations and grants and scholarships together, and check whether APUS receives tuition-assistance and veterans-benefit payments on time. Rising revenue and registrations with stable discounts would show growth is not being bought mainly through more student aid. If growth comes with higher discounts, or delayed aid payments build receivables, revenue quality and cash collection remain under pressure, leaving the durability of enrollment growth in question.
